Leadership and the construction of environmental concerns in Australia. This project analyses leadership of the Australian environment movement and its relationship to the articulation and negotiation of environmental threats and conflict. This research maps environmental leadership across Australia, asking how its formation and evolution impacts on public environmental debate.

Translating zoo visitors’ behavioural intentions into conservation actions using evidence-based post-visit experiences. This project will extend and improve the effectiveness of zoo conservation education initiatives by developing post-visit web-based learning experiences. It will enable zoos to play a greater role in developing an environmentally literate society, motivate collective action for wildlife conservation and measure achievement of mission objectives.
Development of new and high precision noble gas techniques for dating Quaternary volcanic rocks and surfaces: a Thermochronology and Noble Gas Geochronology and Geochemistry Organisation initiative. This project will develop three unique chemical approaches that will each overcome a challenge to the creation of advanced miniaturised analytical devices with sample-in/answer-out capability. Earth mounds in Northern Australia: archaeological and environmental archives of the mid to late holocene. Earth mounds, created and occupied by humans, are a common feature of Australia's northern coastal plains. They can offer unique insights into the formation of this recent landscape, and shed light on climatic and environmental change, and human/environmental interaction. This study will provide important new data for climate change models.
The Norfolk Island Carbon and Health Evaluation Program: a case study of personal carbon trading for reducing obesity and greenhouse gas emissions. This project tests a system of Personal Carbon Trading for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving health. Carbon credit cards given to everyone on Norfolk Island are designed to financially reward people for reducing energy use (fuel and fatty food mainly) by increasing walking/cycling and improving nutrition to improve health

Landfills account for over two per cent of Australia’s greenhouse emissions, dominating emissions from waste and wastewater. Methane emissions are inherent to landfills because waste cannot be permanently sealed until a landfill cell is full. In this project, a microbial fuel cell (MFC) landfill cover will be developed as a means of achieving full biogas capture, from the time that waste is placed. Enhancing sustainable energy saving behaviour through communication: a longitudinal study. This study will identify factors likely to have the most impact on household energy saving behaviour and will also identify the relative strength of different media when undertaking public education campaigns. The research will help alleviate overall energy use and make better use of public marketing communications budgets.

Australian environmental thinking, influenced by comparisons between Indigenous and Anglo-Australian perspectives, has yet to fully engage with the contribution of diverse migrant knowledges and practices. Yet in order to face the challenges of a climate changing world, it is important to draw on the most varied adaptive capacities and cultural resources possible.
