Understanding the lessons of Australia's Gold Coast through the late 20th century debate on criticality and instrumentality in architecture. This project will investigate the role of architecture in the western city through problems in 20th century architectural theory. It will show how the Gold Coast offers new insights into contemporary architecture and will result in two closely related books: an architectural history of the Gold Coast; and a new account of contemporary architectural theory.
Decorum as an Idea in Architecture, from the Renaissance to the Present. Examines the theory and practice of decorum in architecture from the Renaissance to the present day. The principal aims are to set decorum within the history of ideas and to establish the relevance of the concept to modernism and contemporary debates on the nature of architecture. The project will be empirically innovative and significant to both historians and theorists. The expected outcome is a book-length study.
Campus: Building Modern Australian Universities. This project plans to examine the post-World War Two evolution of the Australian university campus. Modern campuses created opportunities for the realisation of innovative solutions in urban planning, architecture and landscape. The project plans to reveal the physical impacts of political, institutional, social and cultural demands through comparative thematic investigation, digital visualisation and detailed case studies. This project aims to generate design guidelines to assist architects in creating better palliative care environments to mitigate the stress associated with end-of-life events for patients, their families and healthcare teams. Facing death, either one’s own or that of a family member, is one of life’s most difficult experiences. Targeted design interventions can encourage early engagement with palliative care, enhance communication ....Designing for early engagement and wellbeing in palliative care.
