Summary
Stroke is the second most common cause of death and major cause disability. There are few proven interventions, so we need to introduce new ones. We developed a bench to bedside program to introduce new stroke therapies and its early secondary prevention. Our general goal is to provide evidence for their effectiveness and safety. We will use animal stroke models, markers in the blood to help diagnose and predict stroke outcome and imaging to help select patients for several clinical trials.
Ethics and aesthetics as criteria for innovation: A design research study of biological art and digital architecture. The project will contribute to the goal of promoting innovation in three areas. The project will contribute to the goal of promoting innovation in three areas. First, the project will amplify Australia's individual strengths in biological art and digital architecture by creating a network of artists and designers in which each discipline is stimulated by the concerns and practices of the other. Second, the project will explain innovation in such networks, by identifying activities that lead to innovation. Such an explanation will improve the nation's capacity to promote innovation in targeted fields. Third, the project will test and develop collaboration tools designed to support the activities identified as leading to innovation, as information technology is a primary enabler for operating across such networks.

As a major player in the maintenance of regional peace and security, Australia is increasingly using Australian Federation Police (AFP) in a range of international operations. The extent of deployments and the expectations both governments and communities place on these operations is unprecedented. This project, in collaboration with the AFP, will draw upon recent experiences to provide a clear legal framework, advancing the capacity for AFP deployments to maintain their high commitment to the rule of law. The project is of international significance and will consolidate Australia's reputation as innovative and influential in the planning, management and conduct of police in international operations. Adult Sexual Assault: An evidence-based policy, practice and advocacy model for Victoria Police. Sexual violence causes long term health and economic costs. One Australian study estimates the fiscal cost to victims and the community as 230m dollars per year. The trauma of the assault is often compounded by police investigative processes that victims find alienating and demeaning. Eliminating significant barriers to police reporting and creating a more just criminal response is essential. The trauma of the assault is often compounded by police investigative processes that victims find alienating and demeaning. Eliminating significant barriers to police reporting and creating a more just criminal response is essential. Sexual assault is recognised globally as a Human Rights issue that is receiving increasing attention by governments in Australia. This project will result in the implementation of a policing model that advances the rights and welfare of victims therefore contributing an important step in ameliorating some of the documented health consequences.

Multi-scale modeling of transport through deformable porous materials. Understanding solute transport through porous materials is essential because it provides a technical basis for answering many important questions in society today-how can humans avoid 'brittle bones', how to design durable infrastructure, how to safely store wastes (e.g. hazardous and municipal). Solution of each of these problems requires innovation in model development, new method of analysis, and insightful interpretation of results. While theoretical developments of this project are general, in the sense that they are not restricted to particular engineering disciplines, the four chosen applications closely align with two major research priorities namely An Environmental Sustainable Australia and Promoting and Maintaining Good Health.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop a fundamental understanding of the response of saturated sand in seabeds during rapid penetration by offshore site investigation tools and foundation construction. The research is using innovative physical and advanced numerical modelling techniques to quantify the significant increase in sand resistance caused by rapid penetration, enabling reliable design and reducing risk of material failure associated with the high impact forces. Expected outcomes of the project include a conceptual framework and scientific-based design tool to predict the geotechnical performance of offshore installations. The research will provide the necessary scientific advances to install, moor and service offshore wind and wave energy devices more economically and efficiently.Read moreRead less
A novel foundation to extend the operation of mobile structures into deeper water. Oil and gas is a key industry in Australia, contributing A$17 billion to the economy. The research in this proposal addresses this concern, providing an extension of the operational depth range of mobile jack-up platforms from 120 to 200 m. This creates the opportunity to develop the significant number of Australia's smaller gas fields that are currently uneconomical to exploit. The proposed project will contribute to the future competitiveness of Australia's oil and gas industry and ensuring energy supply for the sustained growth of the Australian economy.Read moreRead less

State-of-the-art facility for non-destructive testing of concrete infrastructure: There are many recent examples around the world where ageing concrete infrastructure has led to catastrophic failures with loss of life and severe damage to infrastructure. Non destructive testing (NDT) gives a reliable method to provide an accurate assessment of the condition of a structure. However NDT requires an understanding of the various methods available, and their capabilities and limitations, through systematic research projects. Very little research has been done in Australia and overseas in this area due to lack of facilities. This state-of-the-art testing equipment will provide Australian institutions with a cutting edge facility with portable equipment for NDT related research.Read moreRead less
Development of Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) material with spiral-shaped fibres. This project will develop new spiral-shaped steel fibres to be added in concrete to improve its strength, toughness, crack bridging, deformation and impact resistance capacities. It will create better concrete material for wide applications in construction to resist extreme loading conditions such as explosions and high-speed impacts.

This project aims to investigate the process of lifting objects off the seabed. Understanding this breakout process is the scientific basis for a variety of offshore applications such as oil and gas decommissioning, marine salvage and securing foundations under extreme storms. This project expects to advance the understanding of soil-fluid-structure interactions of this problem using innovative high-speed photography observations and advanced numerical coupled analyses. Outcomes will include a numerical tool, verified against a high quality experimental database, to predict the breakout process and uplift required for pressing offshore challenges. The ability for Australia’s engineers to predict lift procedures more accurately will contribute to safer operations in Australian waters and to the more economic harnessing of ocean resources.Read moreRead less
