    The Regulation Of IgE Antibody Production By Antigen-specific B Cells

    Summary
    Asthma and other allergies are caused by the inappropriate production of IgE antibodies by the immune system. IgE is not produced in response to most infections but the controls that normally prevent IgE production are unknown. We have identified two separate molecules that prevent IgE production during immune responses. In this proposal we aim to investigate how these controls work. This information may help to devise strategies for controlling IgE production and therefore allergic disease.

    Treatment of grass pollen allergy by immunotherapy reduces the risk of asthma but most reagents for diagnosis and treatment are based on cool climate grasses. We will develop a more specific diagnostic blood test for people with hay fever and allergic asthma triggered by subtropical Bahia grass pollen. This test based on the major allergen of Bahia grass pollen, Pas n 1, will help people who need improved accuracy of diagnosis and more effective treatment outcomes for hay fever and allergic asth ....     Dissecting the physiology of multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells to develop vaccine candidates for respiratory disease. The project aims to gain an understanding of how a type of adult stem cell inhibits immune responses that cause asthma. The project will produce new stem cell products and facilitate the design of a vaccine for asthma and other respiratory diseases, which would greatly reduce the burden of such conditions.
