    COMPLEX NETWORKS: DYNAMICS, OPTIMIZATION AND CONTROL. Complex networks such large power grids, the Internet, transportation networks and co-operation networks of all kinds provide challenges for frontier technologies particularly computing, communication and control. In particular, advanced societies have become dependent on large infrastructure networks to an extent beyond our capability to plan and control them. The recent spate of collapses in power grids and virus attacks on the Internet illustrate the need for research on modelling, analysis of behaviour, planning and control in such networks. This project aims to establish research in this area for Australia's benefit.

    Manipulation of Nano-Scale Assembly, Structure and Interaction: New Drug Delivery Vehicles and Energy Storage Devices for Miniaturised Portable Electronic Products. Nano-scale molecular and surface interactions will be manipulated to develop new nano-structured products. There will be two themes of research activity. In the first theme, newly discovered ionic liquids will be employed to better elucidate the role of hydrophobic interaction in molecular assembly processes. These findings wil .... Manipulation of Nano-Scale Assembly, Structure and Interaction: New Drug Delivery Vehicles and Energy Storage Devices for Miniaturised Portable Electronic Products. Nano-scale molecular and surface interactions will be manipulated to develop new nano-structured products. There will be two themes of research activity. In the first theme, newly discovered ionic liquids will be employed to better elucidate the role of hydrophobic interaction in molecular assembly processes. These findings will assist in the development of surfactant-drug conjugates that can self-assemble and can converge therapeutic, drug delivery and controlled release functions; allowing drugs to be administered in the therapeutic concentration range for prolonged periods of time with reduced side-effects. In the second theme, nano-materials will be used to converge capacitor and battery technologies to provide a dramatic performance boost to miniaturised portable electronic devices.
