OPTIMA addresses industry’s urgent need for decision-making tools for global competitiveness: reducing lead times, and financial and environmental costs, while improving efficiency, quality, and agility. Despite strong expertise in academia, industry is yet to fully benefit from optimisation technology due to its high barrier to entry. Connecting industry partners with world-leading interdisciplinary researchers and talented students, OPTIMA will advance an industry-ready optimisation toolkit, while training a new generation of industry practitioners and over 120 young researchers, vanguarding a highly skilled workforce of change agents for transformation of the advanced manufacturing, energy resources, and critical infrastructure sectors.Read moreRead less
Joint System Identification for Point Processes and Time-series. In various application areas such as neurophysiology, earthquake modeling, price spikes in electricity markets, the data of interest are point processes (aka sequences of events) or combinations of point processes and analog signals. To understand the underlying subject of interest we need to be able to extract the maximum information from these observation sequences. The current tools for doing this are very limited. This resear ....Joint System Identification for Point Processes and Time-series. This research program will develop the complex signal processing and system methodology needed to create a suitable tool set.Read moreRead less
Algebraic and geometric methods in switched control system analysis and design. The theory of switched control systems underpins complex network technologies that enable cleaner, more efficient and sustainable energy, transport and industry. The research aims to extend the fundamental knowledge base in systems and control, contributing to maintain the solid world-class reputation of Australia in the field.
A general framework for the stability and robustness of dynamical systems. Stability and robustness are crucial properties of well-engineered dynamical systems. This project aims to unify several notions of stability and robustness and to expand these notions to the emerging area of hybrid systems, which includes next generation electricity distribution networks.
Mathematical model reduction for complex networks. This project aims to develop new mathematical methodology to describe the collective behaviour of large networks of oscillators with parameters called collective coordinates. This will allow for the quantitative description of finite-size networks as well as chaotic dynamics, which are both out of reach for current model reduction methods. The project will apply methodology to understand the causes of, and ways to prevent, glitches and failure i ....Mathematical model reduction for complex networks. This project aims to develop new mathematical methodology to describe the collective behaviour of large networks of oscillators with parameters called collective coordinates. This will allow for the quantitative description of finite-size networks as well as chaotic dynamics, which are both out of reach for current model reduction methods. The project will apply methodology to understand the causes of, and ways to prevent, glitches and failure in the emerging modern decentralised power grids. This will develop a framework to address this question, tailored to deal with the hitherto uncharted case of finite-size networks.Read moreRead less
Towards a unified theory of constrained control and estimation. The project will investigate the implications of duality and other connections between constrained control and estimation. We believe that the research will result in a richer understanding of these problems. In particular, we envisage an impact in at least four areas: (i) Computational issues, i.e., development of more efficient algorithms for constrained problems. (ii) Geometry of constrained problems, by extending recent results ....Towards a unified theory of constrained control and estimation. (ii) Geometry of constrained problems, by extending recent results pertaining to constrained control to estimation problems. (iii) Problems with mixed constraints, for example, interval and finite set constraints. (iv) Fundamental limitations imposed by constraints to filtering and control problems.Read moreRead less

Parsimonious Quantization in Signal Processing and Control. In today's society there is an abundance of data. Indeed, it could be argued that we suffer from data 'overload'. For that purpose, the data must be sampled (in time) and quantized (in space). Within this context, the current project is aimed at understanding aspects of sampled parsimonious quantization. The results have widespread practical uses including digital cameras, video compression, audio quantization, control over communication networks, switching of electronic devices and many others.Read moreRead less
