Cost effective storage of massive intermediate data in cloud computing applications. For frontier technologies, the project aims at inventing novel algorithms for data storage in cloud computing applications and hence will reduce the cost by smart information use. For sustainability, the project can help with reducing energy consumption by dealing more effectively with the growth of massive data in cloud computing facilities.
Energy-Efficient Computing: Expanding the Role of Scheduling in Cloud Data Centres. Cloud data centres have become increasingly large-scale to meet ever increasing computing and storage capacity. The requirement of uninterrupted service availability has also contributed to such expansion. However, this relentless pursuit of high performance and high availability has led to serious resource over-provisioning and, in turn, low performance to energy consumption ratios. The impact of this poor resource management goes beyond the issue of cloud data centre efficiency, including excessive carbon footprint. This project aims to develop new energy-aware scheduling and resource allocation algorithms to provide energy-efficient solutions. These solutions exploit both workload and system diversity in cloud data centres.Read moreRead less

Outcome of this project includes practical solutions through building novel mathematical frameworks and resource management objectives accompanied by system implementations. These outcomes will benefit both scientific and industrial communities, and mark Australian scientists as pioneers in this emerging area of research.Read moreRead less
Optimising service level agreements for performance and energy efficiency in cloud computing systems. In cloud platforms a large number of applications compete for shared resources. Concerns of power consumption have become increasingly significant in the context of the design and use of cloud systems. In this project new algorithms and software tools will be developed to enable a better utilisation of clouds whilst minimising energy usage.

This project aims to develop adaptive resource management solutions in edge computing systems for efficient management of the use of limited computing resources and varying renewable energy resources without compromising the stringent needs of emerging Internet of Things applications. These resources will be jointly managed on the diverse, dispersed, often independently owned and operated edge devices with a set of prediction, scheduling and energy saving techniques. The expected outcome is to realise a sustainable edge computing system to reduce both operational cost and negative environmental impact of the system. This project will elevate Australia to be a dominant player in sustainable computing and lead future development trends.
