The installation of this new supercomputing facility is an important addition to the nation's foundation research infrastructure. Of particular importance to research groups in NSW is the much needed boost in computational research and research training capacity that it will provide, enabling world leading research teams to continue their ground breaking work in an increasingly competitive international environment. Much of the research to be supported lies in areas of national priority, including frontier technologies and Australian environmental sustainability.

Towards a high density silicon phase change memory device. This project builds upon our exciting recent findings that amorphous silicon can be transformed to a conducting crystalline phase following small-scale indentation. Furthermore the process is reversible as re-indentation can induce a transformation back to insulating amorphous silicon. This process appears to occur in extremely small (nanoscale) volumes of silicon. We plan to explore the viability of exploiting this behaviour to develop an entirely new information storage system: a high-density silicon phase change memory. This project aims to study small-scale transformation behaviour in silicon and to design demonstrator memory devices based on both micro-electromechanical systems and solid state technologies.

Floating-zone Crystal Growth Facility. Optical floating-zone furnaces are powerful and efficient tools for the discovery and characterisation of new materials. They are widely used in the solid-state chemistry, condensed-matter physics, materials science, and engineering communities. Optical floating-zone furnaces are powerful and efficient tools for the discovery and characterisation of new materials. They are widely used in the solid-state chemistry, condensed-matter physics, materials science, and engineering communities. This optical floating-zone furnace, the first in Australia, will support and encourage the growing number of local researchers in these fields. It will allow them to take much better advantage of the new research reactor and synchrotron being constructed in Australia by maximising their ability to grow crystals of technologically and scientifically important materials, particularly electronic and magnetic materials, for fundamental and applied research at those facilities.

Young Investigators Network on Next Generation Electronic Devices. This initiative will build an active, dynamic and strongly interdisciplinary network of young Australian scientists (most awarded their Ph.D. after 1985) working on the development of innovative electronic devices - a national research priority area with enormous economic and technological opportunity. The network will enable a nationally coordinated, internationally competitive approach that capitalizes on untapped opportunities, utilises existing/emerging Australian expertise and develops strong supporting links with similar networks overseas. The initiative will produce a public showcase of Australian strengths and opportunities in this field, and enable stronger collaborations and cooperative logistics management through the development of a dedicated network management website.
