The purpose of this project is to make available to the Australian semiconductor research community a facility to undertake specialist deposition and etching tasks needed for fabrication of next generation solar cells, microelectronics, optronics, and micro-electromechanical systems. The facility will have the flexibility to allow independent control of major process parameters, allowing development of new fabrication technologies which will be generic to a wide range of semiconductor materials. In particular, the facility will be unique in its ability to perform processes at low temperatures, and under conditions that allow optimisation of the deposition and etching processes, without compromising the performance of delicate devices or exceeding the maximum process temperature limitations found in many mainstream semiconductor materials technologies.Read moreRead less

Most hi-tech electronic devices must process signals. A mobile phone, for example, must encode, transmit, decode and receive voice signals. This project will use specialised mathematical theories applied in novel ways to advance the theoretical foundations of signal processing and develop better signal processing algorithms for practical applications. Companies with access to better signal processing algorithms have an edge over their competitors, and consumers benefit too from better and more advanced products.Read moreRead less

Overhead power transmission systems are a common instigator of fires through the production of sparks from faulty insulators. Australia is experiencing extended hot and dry conditions that amplify the risk of these events becoming large scale bushfires, causing millions of dollars of damage and destroying immeasurable amounts of native flora and fauna. The overhead transmission line sensing system proposed in this research will provide power companies with a cost effective insulator condition monitoring tool to continually survey Australia's aging electrical infrastructure. This ensures a reliable electricity supply to consumers, while also protecting the ecosystems of Australia's bushland. Read moreRead less

This project will develop a robust technique for the quantitative real-time imaging of high-temperature superconductors. The image-analysis algorithm so obtained will be a virtual software lens, which is able to decode the information contained in data obtained by a well-established but hitherto qualitative imaging technique. We will transform this technique into one uniquely capable of obtaining two-dimensional movies of the current distributions, magnetic fields, and pinning defects in superconducting films. Such a quantitative characterization of these key superconductor parameters will be an important tool in the present global quest for room-temperature superconductivity.Read moreRead less

Automobile radar systems are an important technology for improving road safety by providing advanced driver warnings in vehicles. Though such devices currently exist in practice there is no guarantee that they will operate successfully when deployed on a mass scale in every vehicle given the limited allocated frequency spectrum. The spectral interference due to radar access becomes a major issue when several radars operate in a confined bandwidth simultaneously, potentially leading to a complete system failure during mass deployment. This project will conduct fundamental research intended to enable dynamic spectrum accessing in automobile radars and redesign the radar systems in the form of sequence and waveform designs to suit requirements.Read moreRead less
