The Centre will tackle some of the biggest challenges facing society: those of renewable energy, sustainable industries and enhancing human health. Improvements in all these areas are possible by developing electromaterials with improved efficiency in the generation and transfer of electrical charge. By developing new nano-materials and new theories to explain their behaviour, the Centre will make advances in the areas of human health through the regeneration of damaged nerves (eg. in spinal injury) and development of artificial muscles; in renewable energy (plastic solar cells, lightweight batteries and electronic textiles) and in sustainable industries (recovery of precious metals and new corrosion protection technologies).Read moreRead less

Nanoparticles can have unique and interesting properties such as optical activity and redox (electronic) behaviour that can be utilised in a number of applications such as drug delivery and cancer hyperthermia treatments, coatings, electronic devices and sensors. The main aims of this research program are to produce novel nanoparticles using an innovative method which uses biological species such as fungi and plant extracts, and to study the growth mechanisms, structure and properties of these nanoparticles. These studies could lead to the discovery of novel nanoparticles with applications in the fields mentioned above. This project also aims to train/educate young Australian graduates in the growing area of advanced materials.Read moreRead less
Nanoporous nanorods with improved electrochemical properties. This project applies the latest nanotechnology to produce new nanomaterials for energy storage applications. The aim is to significantly improve supercapacitor performance for use in the storage of clean energy and harvesting of wasted energy which will contribute to a clean energy economy.
A new design strategy for supercapacitors. This project aims to build a new equivalent electric circuit model using structurally tuneable graphene-based porous electrodes to establish a quantitative structure-property-performance relationship for super-capacitors. The new model will then be used to design novel electrode and device architectures to realise new energy storage devices with high usable storage capacity at high operation rates. Funding is requested to establish a world-leading fabrication facility for nanostructured materials via flame synthesis. This is a scalable fabrication route used for industrial production of most nanoparticle commodities. The aim is to advance current capabilities by providing control over the reaction environment and flame reaction sources. This will extend the range of feasible materials from the current metal oxides to a broad family of nitrides, sulphides, and metal-organic frameworks, enabling the engineering of electrocatalysts, optoelectronic- and bio-materials. Benefits are expected in terms of fundamental and applied knowledge generation, with impact to the Australian industry sectors of Advanced Manufacturing, Energy and Health.Read moreRead less

Lithium ion batteries play a key role in our current life, from portable electronics to electric vehicles. However the performance of lithium batteries, especially their short life cycle and low capacity, still requires improvement based on a clear understanding of the battery mechanism. Using the in-situ transmission electron microscopy technology, this project will study the lithium ion intercalation process of a model battery inside transmission electron microscope. The lithium ion transportation and the microstructure evolution of electrode materials will be directly imaged at the atomic scale in real time. This investigation will facilitate the improvement of current batteries and also the exploration of new battery materials.Read moreRead less
Nanotechnology enabled electrochemical energy storage materials from indigenous natural graphite. This project aims to develop a technology package for reclamation of fine-fractions of indigenous natural graphite to create high-value, nano-engineered 'graphene-based' energy storage materials. A multidisciplinary team of experts in materials science, chemical engineering, physics and electrochemistry will address this issue of national priority.
