Summary
Reading as a cultural and historical practice. A better understanding and use of reading as an academic tool for Indigenous and non-Indigenous students and educators will be a result of the research. It will provide a new understanding of how reading skills can be used by Indigenous students to comprehend academic information and how academics can approach reading without excluding Indigenous knowledges.
Bayini, Macassans, Balanda and Bininij: A Case Study of Indigenous Cultural Heritage Management and Tourism in West Arnhemland Northern Territory. Contact between cultures is a defining theme in history and is especially relevant to contemporary Australia. The timing of contact between South East Asians and Europeans with Aboriginal communities in Arnhem Land is of great historical significance to Australia. This collaborative project with the National Foundation for Australian Women explores the changing extent and nature of Australian women's philanthropic giving since1880. It will test the hypothesis that these activities both reflected broader constructions of gender and shaped civil society and public policy.
