Summary
In my 5 year research fellowship I will lead internationally relevant research on better policy options for illegal drugs, such as methamphetamine, heroin and cannabis. Drug policy can be driven by politics and the media, rather than research evidence. I will generate a cutting edge and fresh perspective with an agile approach to new research that takes into account the rapidly changing field of drug policy. This will provide policy makers with a new framework for evidence-based policy reforms.
I lead an internationally recognised research program that examines how governments can best respond to alcohol and illegal drugs – a significant health and social problem in Australia. My research generates new evidence to inform drug policy and I study how to translate research into meaningful information that governments can use. My aim is to improve how Australia responds; reducing the community harms and improving the health of those affected by alcohol and drugs.

I am a behavioural scientist interested in the causes and prevention of hazardous alcohol consumption. I propose a program of research examining methods in behavioural science, risk factors for hazardous drinking, the development and evaluation of interventions to reduce hazardous drinking, and the evaluation of policies affecting the supply and promotion of alcohol. I lead a research team with strong collaborations with leading scientists in Australia and other countries.

Summary
I have developed a programme of applied health services research by winning grants, publications in good journals, investing in PhD and post-doc researchers and engaging with state governments and health departments. In 2011 I set up the Australian Centre for Health Services Innovation that will improve health services by funding health services research, and offering research training for health care professionals. The purpose of this fellowship is to sustain this activity.
The proposed program of research consists of (i) conducting a new trial to examine feasible and relatively low-cost physical activity promotion programs for adults with pre-diabetes; (ii) completing a series of existing major-funded studies relating to health promotion and education programs to promote physical activity; and (iii) I will serve as the Director for the University of Newcastle’s recently-funded Priority Research Centre in Physical Activity and Nutrition.

Summary
The burden of suicide persists partly because we don’t know what works and what doesn’t work in suicide prevention. Relatively little research effort has been invested in studies that can tell us how best to direct resources. The problem is compounded by a disconnect between researchers and decision-makers. Through this Fellowship, Jane Pirkis will develop and implement a model for working with decision-makers to generate the best possible evidence upon which to base suicide prevention policy.
