Summary
One in five Australian children are already overweight or obese at age 5 years, by the time of school entry. Early childhood is a period when physical inactivity and poor eating habits become established and may persist life-long. We propose a Centre of Research Excellence in the Early Prevention of Obesity in Childhood. The Centre aims to reduce the prevalence of obesity and obesity-related behaviours in the first five years of life, and their future impact.

Indigenous and regional Australians are most affected by Australia's biggest killer - heart disease. In response, the CRE to Reduce Inequality in Heart Disease, is a national collaboration of researchers from a range of health disciplines. The Centre for Research Excellence in Nursing Interventions for Hospitalised Patients will provide evidence to improve the nursing care of a broad range of hospitalised patients who are at risk of complications related to compromised skin integrity and poor pain/anxiety management. Systematic reviews and clinical trials will provide the basis for developing clinical practice guidelines to assist nurses in providing high quality care to the 3.5 million Australians admitted to hospital each year.
