This project undertakes a qualitative study of Australian unionists' usage of networked computers and their potential for increasing trade union membership and participation, and promoting productive diversity in workplaces. At a time of declining unionisation, these issues have become urgent and give rise to key research questions about email and the Internet in trade union organisation and communication with members. Supporting or sabotaging sustainable development? State policy responses to environmental certification schemes. Almost everywhere, forests and fisheries are experiencing degradation and biodiversity loss. Since 1990, governments, industry and civil society organizations have expressed growing interest in market-based instruments for environmentally sustainable development. However, while states support the use of market-based instruments in general, serious problems arise with specific schemes. ....Supporting or sabotaging sustainable development? This project will find mechanisms for improving public debate regarding climate change and the ability to respond to the challenge, as well as the politics surrounding it. It will make recommendations about the approaches needed to transform the issue and at the same time achieve better democratic outcomes.
The Jihadi, Revolutionary and Anti-war Fiction in Afghanistan, 1978-2007. Afghanistan is a key area of global security concerns. An analysis of three decades of jihadi, revolutionary and anti-war literature (1978-2007) will provide an understanding of how different political groups, particularly the jihadis, utilised literature to further their interests. Australia needs to understand the underlying cultural debates that persist in Afghanistan in order to engage effectively with regional securit ....The Jihadi, Revolutionary and Anti-war Fiction in Afghanistan, 1978-2007. Afghanistan is a key area of global security concerns. An analysis of three decades of jihadi, revolutionary and anti-war literature (1978-2007) will provide an understanding of how different political groups, particularly the jihadis, utilised literature to further their interests. Australia needs to understand the underlying cultural debates that persist in Afghanistan in order to engage effectively with regional security and counter-terrorism. Despite media controls, the jihadis promoted their cause through published literary sources, imitating the growing Islamic literature of the Middle East. This project explores the role of the Brazilian National Development Bank (BNDES) in inciting the internationalisation of Brazilian firms and the expansion of Brazil's foreign policy across the global South. It critically examines Brazil's engagement with Bolivia, Paraguay, Angola and Mozambique, asking how Brazil is being received and perceived.
Openness in China under the WTO Regime: the Case of Dingzhou. The project will contribute to a better understanding in Australia of openness in local China, in particular, and sociopolical change in China and the globalization process in general.
