Summary
Treatments for leukaemia (e.g. chemotherapy) severely deplete immune and blood cells from patients. Transplantation of new blood forming cells (blood stem cells) into these patients is essential, but challenges are faced with isolating sufficient numbers in ways that preserve their ability to reconstitute the blood post transplant. My research aims to advance understanding of current methods used to isolate these cells and ultimately to improve the success of blood stem cell transplantation.

Mice and humans are genetically and physiologically similar, and are afflicted by many of the same diseases. By introducing random DNA mutations into the germline, mice with diseaseassociated characteristics can be generated, allowing the subsequent identification of genes involved in particular human disease processes. This project will utilise cutting-edge genetic technologies to discover genes that regulate production of the body�s principal blood clotting agents: platelets. Summary
Schistosoma haematobium is a seriously neglected parasite that infects > 100 million people. Chronic infection severely affects the urino-genital system and causes malignant bladder cancer. Advanced technologies will be used to explore, for the first time, the molecular biology of this parasite, design new strategies to fight this insidious pathogen and understand how it induces cancer.
