Improving children's language, literacy and mental health: evaluating the impact of the classroom promotion of oral language (CPOL) approach. As spoken communication and literacy are major influences on children's developmental pathways and life success, this project will determine whether improving teacher knowledge and practice relating to teaching oral language improves primary school students' achievements in oral language and literacy, and improves their social and emotional wellbeing.

Summary
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training has an established track record in high-income countries of improving knowledge, attitudes and behaviours in relation to people with mental health problems. However, appropriateness of the course content and implementation models in middle-income countries is unknown. This project provides a unique opportunity to develop and pilot culturally appropriate MHFA training to improve population mental health in middle-income countries.

The economic, health, a social and personal cost to the Australian community of depression constitutes a public health concern of undoubted significance. Debates in both policy and public arenas are hampered by a lack of comprehensive reliable evidence about factors underlying depression and more importantly recovery from depression.
