Summary
Health practitioners with performance, health or conduct concerns can present a serious risk to patients. Yet we lack reliable methods for identifying these practitioners at an early stage. Each year the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency receives 1,000s of notifications about individual practitioners. We will use this data to identify “hot spots” of risk among different groups of practitioners and help target interventions to support practitioners and protect patients from harm.

Early menopause (EM) (menopause before age 45 yrs), occurring spontaneously or secondary to medical treatments, affects more than 10% of women. EM is associated with negative impacts on psychological/physical health, both short and long term. This project aims to clarify EM health issues and address gaps in consumer/health professional understanding/ treatment of EM, with development of resources including a comprehensive EM website for consumers/health professionals to improve health outcomes.

Seizing the rare opportunity presented by well funded anti-tobacco media campaigns in Victoria over 2011-13, this research aims to investigate the optimum strength and type of emotion evoked by anti-smoking ads by examining smokers responses to a variety of ads. To decide whether campaign messages need to be tailored for disadvantaged groups, this research focuses on whether the impact of emotion in anti-smoking ads is different in disadvantaged smokers as compared to the broader population.

For far too many of these children, a poor start predicts a poor future. This is especially true for Tasmanian children who live in amongst the most disadvantaged circumstances in Australia. This project will follow 12,000 Tasmanian children through early childhood services from birth to age five to find out if services are meeting their needs. The information will be used to improve services and improve the health and education of all Tasmanian children.
