An exploratory cluster trial of a sustainable capacity building intervention to promote positive child mental health in Family Day Care. Rarely is solution-oriented intervention research built and conducted with rigorous research designs in communities of extreme disadvantage. This study builds on the enthusiasm of a leading child welfare organisation in its commitment to contribute to evidence for practice-oriented solutions. The research will serve as a model for the Family Day Care and childcare sectors. The study is an essential step in the development of an intervention prior to a large-scale evaluation. With a strong evidence base, this program may be implemented widely within the sector nationally, thus addressing a key area of children's health inequalities - mental health.

PRevention & Early Intervention In Mental Illness And Substance UsE (PREMISE CRE)

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $2,495,969.00
    Summary
Substance use and mental disorders are among the leading causes of burden of disease in young people globally. Effective prevention and early intervention can reduce disease burden by halting, interrupting or delaying the onset and development of disorder. The PREMISE CRE will build the science to move the field from crisis, acute care and containment to prevention and early intervention, achieving a critical aim of the Australian Government’s program of reform in mental health and addiction.

The Centre will be developed through the extension of a youth psychiatry clinical research program of international standing across Melbourne and Sydney. The CCRE will have a major impact on the growth and sustainability of clinical research expertise in youth mental health and its translation into clinical practice. Funds will be targeted specifically at two key opportunities in an evolving structure, namely the early career path for emerging young clinical researchers and the need for more innovative and potent translation of clinical research into the real world of clinical practice. NHMRC CCRE funding will strengthen the ORC initiative by strategically filling gaps in early career development and training, and drive dissemination and translation of research into clinical practice across Australia.

PSYSCAN— Translating Neuroimaging Findings From Research Into Clinical Practice

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $376,285.00
    Summary
Our ability to predict the onset and outcome of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders remains limited. This restricts the implementation of effective preventative and early interventions. This project will rectify this by developing a tool of significant clinical utility. The project has 2 aims: 1. To develop and validate a neuroimaging-based tool for use in early psychosis to assist with early diagnosis, outcome, and disease progression. 2. To apply the tool in clinical practice.

Enhancing The Capacity Of Mental Health Services To Review, Personalise And Intervene Early Through Implementation Of Real-time Outcome Monitoring

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $181,065.00
    Summary
By monitoring functioning and symptom changes experienced by severe mental illness patients in their living environments, mental health services can identify those experiencing decline earlier and hence deliver appropriate and timely interventions. However, monitoring is currently poorly implemented in Australian mental health services and inadequately supported by national policy. The applicant proposes to address this evidence-practice gap through a mobile phone-based monitoring system.

Preventing Child Internalising Problems: Follow Up Of A Population-based Randomised Trial Through Middle Childhood.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $472,604.00
    Summary
Many Australians suffer with internalising problems (anxiety, depression). They affect 1 in 7 school age children, impacting peer relations, school engagement and later mental health. Inhibited temperament (fearfulness, withdrawal) places children at risk. In 2010-14 we conducted a randomised prevention trial, screening preschoolers for inhibition and offering the Cool Little Kids parenting group program to those affected. We are now following families in this trial in mid-childhood (age 7-10).

National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,638,775.00
    Summary
Adolescence is a life period where mental disorders often have first onset. However, adolescents may not have the knowledge or life experience to take effective action if they affected by a mental health problem. Adolescents often turn to parents for support and advice if they develop a mental health problem. The aim of this project is to see whether parents who are trained in Mental Health First Aid respond more appropriately if their teenager develops a mental health problem.
