Discrete integrable systems. Discrete integrable systems are a fundamental generalisation of traditional integrable systems. This project, combining 5 world experts from 3 countries and 2 early career researchers, will expand and systematise this new interdisciplinary field, and will place Australia at the forefront of this intensive international activity.
The shape of chaos: geometric advances in partially hyperbolic dynamics. This project aims to use recent advances in geometry and topology to discover new forms of chaotic dynamical systems and further classify the forms of chaos which are possible. Many systems in nature exhibit chaotic dynamics as they change in time. Not all systems are chaotic in the same way, and identifying the form of chaos and its qualitative properties is crucial to truly understanding the system. Chaotic dynamics arise in chemical reactions, celestial mechanics, industrial mixing processes, fusion reactors, and many other processes. This project will aid in predicting the possible long-term behaviours of these systems.Read moreRead less
The dynamics of viral latency in chronic infection. Although many acute infections can now be controlled, we still suffer from a large number of chronic infections such as HIV or herpes that cannot be eradicated. Many of these infections persist because they can lie dormant in a 'latent' state. How this latent state is established, and how long it lasts are important to understand if we want to control these infections. We have assembled a team of mathematicians, immunologists and virologists in ....The dynamics of viral latency in chronic infection. We have assembled a team of mathematicians, immunologists and virologists in order to study latent infection at the cellular level, and within infected monkeys. This will provide the first insights into the dynamics of latency - how these cells are produced and die - and should lead to novel approaches to controlling chronic infection.Read moreRead less
New Frontiers and Advances in Discrete Integrable Systems. Integrable systems boast a long and venerable history, and have such famous members as the Kepler system, the Korteweg-de Vries equation, and the sine-Gordon equation. Integrable systems boast a long and venerable history, and have such famous members as the Kepler system, the Korteweg-de Vries equation, and the sine-Gordon equation. More recently, interest in integrable systems has expanded to include systems with discrete time, that is, ordinary difference equations (or maps) and integrable partial difference equations. These discrete integrable systems are arguably more fundamental than the continuous-time ones. Based upon recent breakthroughs this study will combine analysis, geometry, and computer algebra to expand and systematise this new interdisciplinary field of discrete integrable systems.Read moreRead less

This project aims to model immune interactions across cells and structures spanning scales of nanometres to millimetres. It expects to develop innovative mathematical insights, improve our understanding of immunology, and consolidate collaborations with top American and European laboratories and groups. Expected outcomes include cutting-edge techniques for multiscale biological modelling and improved prediction and analysis of immune dynamics. The project should provide benefits to industries where highly organised behaviours are important, for example those interested in robot swarming, optimal transportation, and epidemic management. It should also benefit Australian students and researchers with novel overseas training opportunities.Read moreRead less
Dynamical systems theory and mathematical modelling of viral infections. This project aims to use mathematical modelling to elucidate the emergence of complex, population-level behaviour from local interactions. In particular, the project will study the self-organising dynamics of the immune response. This project aims to use mathematical modelling to elucidate the emergence of complex, population-level behaviour from local interactions. In particular, the project will study the self-organising dynamics of the immune response. The project expects to develop new mathematical models of self-organisation, advance links between computational agent-based modelling and dynamical systems modelling, and build new tools for mathematically analysing complex biological systems. Expected outcomes include strengthened collaborations within Australia and with South Korea. Expected benefits include joint research funding with Korean institutions, increased international visibility, and expanded scope for high school and community outreach.Read moreRead less
Succeeding with Enterprise Architecture Service Provision in Australian Organisations. This project aims to develop, test and refine an innovative model that explains how and why Australian organisations achieve benefits with enterprise architecture services. This project aims to develop, test and refine an innovative model that explains how and why Australian organisations achieve benefits with enterprise architecture services. Enterprise architecture services involve the provision of relevant and timely advice about future IT systems, databases and digitised processes to strategic IT decision-makers. The model will enable Australian organisations to better understand the capabilities required to achieve success with enterprise architecture services, the outcomes that can be achieved and the benefits realised. This will help Australian organisations to make more effective strategic investments in IT and remain globally competitive.Read moreRead less

This project aims at providing a uniform and efficient framework for bootstrapping, establishing, and propagating reputation in composed Web services. Reputation is used as a key criterion for establishing trust among composed Web services. Web services are de-facto the technology of choice for the deployment of an increasing number of Web-based solutions for such emerging applications as cloud computing. Because of the distributed and decentralised nature of the Web, there is a need to establish a trust framework for selecting and composing Web services. The key parameter will be based on Web service reputation in delivering services.Read moreRead less
