This project aims to develop statistical tools that integrate high-throughput molecular data with biological knowledge to make discoveries in complex diseases. This project uses machine learning methods, statistical models and proteomic platforms to identify relationships among clinico-pathologic and molecular measurements. It will produce tools and insights that are intended to accelerate the process of biologically and clinically significant discoveries in biomedical research. This project will help Australian researchers in statistics and users of statistics (from fields as diverse as biology, ecology, medicine, finance, agriculture and the social sciences) to make better predictions that are easier to understand.Read moreRead less
Understanding the Chemical Processes Involved in the Metabolism of Peptide Hormones. Peptide hormones regulate normal physiological activity in humans, and their over-production causes diseases such as cancer. The aims of this project are: to delineate the chemical processes through which these hormones are produced; to develop inhibitors of enzymes involved in hormone production, and agonists and antagonists of receptors through which the hormones act; and to study the ability of the inhibitors ....Understanding the Chemical Processes Involved in the Metabolism of Peptide Hormones. Peptide hormones regulate normal physiological activity in humans, and their over-production causes diseases such as cancer. The aims of this project are: to delineate the chemical processes through which these hormones are produced; to develop inhibitors of enzymes involved in hormone production, and agonists and antagonists of receptors through which the hormones act; and to study the ability of the inhibitors, agonists and antagonists to override and bypass the chemical control mechanisms through which hormone levels are usually maintained at homeostasis. The research is expected to lead to a better fundamental understanding of hormone metabolism, and to underpin the basis for the development of new disease therapies.Read moreRead less
New methods for structure analysis of proteins and protein interactions. This project will advance nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technologies pioneered at the Australian National University which employ site-specific attachment of paramagnetic metal tags to proteins. A new and diverse set of strategies will dramatically extend the range of applications to targets of interest in the fight against cancer and bacterial infections.
The role of Roquin in microRNA function and decay. The aim of this study is to understand how microRNAs (newly discovered genetic components that control cell growth and survival) function and are regulated. The expected discoveries will help understand how common cancers including breast cancer and autoimmune diseases emerge, and will help develop cutting edge genetic technologies.
Adaptive Evolution of BRCA1 in Ancestral Mammals. This project investigates adaptive evolution of BRCA1 in the early radiation of mammals. We will test the hypothesis that the evolution of mammary glands and X chromosome inactivation has resulted in modification of the BRCA1 protein sequence as it aquired new roles in these processes. We will also investigate the importance of these changes inducing compensatory changes in other parts of the protein.
Protein degradation in mammals. One mechanism by which the regulation of protein turnover occurs is the balance between the activity of enzymes responsible for the ubiquitination and deubiquitination of target proteins. The majority of targets of this second family of enzymes are unknown. This project proposes a method for the identification of the targets of two specific mammalian deubiquitinating enzymes in order to understand their function and to begin to explore this new research field. ....Protein degradation in mammals. This project proposes a method for the identification of the targets of two specific mammalian deubiquitinating enzymes in order to understand their function and to begin to explore this new research field. Knowledge about this new aspect of protein degradation could provide a powerful tool to test the effect of the stabilisation or removal of specific proteins in the cell and also to develop new technologies in protein production.Read moreRead less
New functions for bioactive flavonoids in plants and mammals. We have discovered natural products with biological activity in plants and mammals. We have discovered natural products with biological activity in plants and mammals. These molecules affect plant shape and development and the process of mammalian blood vessel formation. We seek to understand how these molecules work. More understanding is required before one can begin to utilise these molecules for possible beneficial agriculture or human health outcomes. Plant shape influences such things as yield or more drought-resilient root systems. Importantly, we have discovered specific molecules that either promote or inhibit blood vessel formation. A better understanding of how these molecules work could lead to novel treatments for cancer or cardiovascular disease.Read moreRead less

Rapid progress in rogue wave research internationally requires the further development of an accurate theory of extreme waves in deep water and in optical fibers. Such progress is a necessity for our ability to predict their appearance in the ocean or their use in optics. This project will enhance the modelling of extreme waves by taking into account higher order effects such as third order dispersion, self-steepening and time delayed response, as well as dissipative and higher order nonlinear terms. These are essential for a precise description of both giant waves in the ocean and strong pulses in optics. Read moreRead less
