Food security and the governance of local knowledge in India and Indonesia. This project aims to discover how local farming communities’ practical knowledge can improve food security. 795 million undernourished people rely on small farmers for food. Developing a systematic, interdisciplinary approach to law reform and development in plural legal regimes. This project will focus on developing a response to issues arising from the interaction between different legal systems operating in the same social sphere (legal pluralism). The research aims to build an innovative, inter-disciplinary approach to law reform and legal development, which will accommodate both State law and Indigenous law.
The effects of female genital mutilation laws in Australia. This project aims to produce new knowledge about laws that have criminalised female genital mutilation (FGM) in Australia since 1994. FGM laws are now subject to robust international criticism, as well as increased concerns among the affected communities. The project aims to transform conceptual understandings of ‘closure’ by studying the experiences of bereaved families and frontline police confronting unsolved homicide. Through fieldwork and interviews, it will research how police and families struggle to manage feelings of loss, frustration, blame and failure. At each site, approval has been obtained for in-depth research access. The project will lead to a book and a series of articles about the evolving policy environment in which local governments interact with entrepreneurs and the counter-strategies entrepreneurs adopt.
