    Systematic Medical Appraisal, Referral And Treatment For Common Mental Disorders In India - SMART Mental Health

    Summary
    An estimated 150 million Indians have mental health disorders and the vast majority receive no care whatsoever. We have developed a solution to strengthen India's primary healthcare system comprising village-based anti-stigma campaigns, and a workforce strategy that leverages the skills of doctors and non-physician frontline workers through use of mobile health technologies. It will be tested in North and South India in a large-scale trial involving 44,000 people and 20 primary health centres.

    This study aims to optimise the management of diabetes in pregnancy (both gestational diabetes and pre-existing type 2 diabetes) and post-partum follow-up of these high risk women in order to reduce the risk of future chronic disease among women and their children. The proposal involves scale-up of successful initiatives that we have developed as part of the NT DIP Partnership, scale-up within the Northern Territory (NT) and to Far North Queensland (FNQ).

    Systems Biology To Identify Molecular Targets For Vascular Disease Treatment (SysVasc), With A Focus On Atherosclerotic Plaque Instability

    Heart attacks are caused by rupture of atherosclerotic deposits (plaques) in vessel walls, which results in clot formation ultimately causing vessel occlusion. In collaboration with strong European collaborators, we will use modern high-throughput technologies in a large patient cohort as well as in a newly generated mouse model to discover the causative proteins, genes and their regulators. This will allow identifying individuals at risk and developing novel therapies to prevent heart attacks.

    A key challenge for treating neurodegenerative diseases is delivery of drugs across the blood–brain barrier (BBB). This project will develop advanced BBB “nanoshuttles” based upon systematic investigation of BBB penetration mechanisms and near-infrared drug controlled release strategy. These delivery systems may facilitate diagnosis of brain diseases and on-demand release of drug cargos to diseased cells in the brain, offering the potential of a brand new localised therapy for brain diseases.

    Establishing The Physiological And Sleep Disruption Characteristics Of Wind Farm Versus Traffic Noise Disturbances In Sleep

    Good sleep is essential for normal daytime functioning and health. Wind farm noise includes audible and unusually low frequency sound components, including infrasound, that could potentially disturb sleep through chronic sleep disruption and/or insomnia. This project will, for the first time, directly evaluate the sleep and physiological disturbance characteristics of wind farm noise compared to traffic noise reproduced in a specialised and carefully controlled laboratory environment.

    Novel Antivirals For The Treatment Of Hendravirus Infection.

    Summary
    Hendravirus outbreaks have become frequent and 7 human cases have been reported, this has resulted in 4 deaths. Currently we have no treatment options. Researchers at Griffith University and the CSIRO have developed a new treatment that attacks the virus by turning off the viral genes at the site of infection. The plan is to treat patients soon after infection to slow or stop the virus and allow patients to recover naturally from this highly lethal disease.

    Using Health Outcome Data From Pooled Longitudinal Studies Of Ageing To Develop Statistical And Microsimulation Models T

    This project draws together data from nine Australian Longitudinal Studies of Ageing (LSAs), including 53484 participants, that will be used to identify factors capable of preventing disease, reducing ill-health, and promoting engaged and successful ageing for Australians. The focus is upon conditions that significantly contribute to the burden of disease including cognitive decline and dementia, sensory impairment, impairment in mobility and common mental disorders such as depression. Although .... This project draws together data from nine Australian Longitudinal Studies of Ageing (LSAs), including 53484 participants, that will be used to identify factors capable of preventing disease, reducing ill-health, and promoting engaged and successful ageing for Australians. The focus is upon conditions that significantly contribute to the burden of disease including cognitive decline and dementia, sensory impairment, impairment in mobility and common mental disorders such as depression. Although individual studies contain rich data on particular topics, there is only a small number of individuals in each study with specific medical conditions, or combinations of different conditions, especially at the older ages. Pooling data from nine studies will overcome this problem. This innovative and interdisciplinary study also involves development of the first Australian dynamic micro-simulation model of the health and social outcomes of the baby boomer and older cohorts. The simulation will allow for evaluation of the impact of modifying risk factors, and costs associated with different trajectories of health and ageing. Our program takes an interdisciplinary life course approach, incorporating interdependencies among demographic, behavioural, social, economic and health factors. Our multidisciplinary team and collaborative pooling of existing studies adds value and builds upon experience, as recommended in the Prime Minister's Science, Engineering and Innovation Council 2003 report. The outcomes will direct health and social policy to promote health behaviour, and social and medical interventions to compress morbidity and optimize healthy ageing in Australian society over the next 40 years.

    PSYSCAN— Translating Neuroimaging Findings From Research Into Clinical Practice

    Our ability to predict the onset and outcome of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders remains limited. This restricts the implementation of effective preventative and early interventions. This project will rectify this by developing a tool of significant clinical utility. The project has 2 aims: 1. To develop and validate a neuroimaging-based tool for use in early psychosis to assist with early diagnosis, outcome, and disease progression. 2. To apply the tool in clinical practice.
