Summary
This project will use fibre-optic technology to create detailed high resolution maps of colonic motor patterns in both health and in patients with severe constipation. The data will be used in combination with actual patient symptoms to help identify specific markers of disease that can differentiate sub-types of constipation and ultimately guide and improve treatment in constipated patients

This project will explore the role of and give voice to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Liaison Officers in acute health care services (hospitals), from the point of view of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who use health care (patients) and the health professionals who work with them. The project team will explore these issues using interviews, patient journeys and surveys across three hospitals.

Summary
Morphine can relieve breathlessness in the palliative setting. But many important questions remain. What is the best dose, should the dose change over time, do different medications provide the same relief, and how common is dyspnoea in the general population? This three part project will extend our knowledge to answer these questions. Population data will provide critical background to plan best care for future palliative patients distressed by breathlessness.

Native fish stocking of rivers: discriminating between hatchery-reared and wild fish. Stocking of fish is widely used in attempts to restore native fish populations. Little is known of the fate of stocked fish or the effects of stocking on resident populations. We will develop and evaluate protocols for chemical marking of otoliths of hatchery-reared fish so that their source can be determined. We are increasingly encouraged to make 'ethical' food choices but lack information about these issues: this project explores Australians' understandings of food ethics. Outcomes include a framework for more thoughtful discussions about food ethics and a series of recommendations for fostering public participation in food policy-making.
Impact of natural organic matter and nutrients on water quality: identification of catchment sources and attenuation processes. Development of a decision support model for land-use selection that protects water resources will be of significant benefit to the water industry. The outcomes of this project will provide water and catchment managers with a technology that significantly secures the supply of resources for high quality drinking water.
