More than a third of poor health is attributable to risky behaviours, such as tobacco and alcohol use, obesity and poor nutrition, with lower socio-economic and Indigenous populations particularly affected. This research will develop new techniques to identify intervention strategies that should be given funding priority to achieve maximum improvement in population health and reduce the health inequalities.

We will examine the practical feasibility, ethical and public acceptability, and likely cost effectiveness of a number of different ways of reducing tobacco smoking and the harm caused by smoking in Australia. These policy options will include: (1) more restrictive policies towards tobacco products (such as prohibiting tobacco smoking and creating a government monopoly on the manufacture and supply of tobacco); (2) encouraging smokers to switch from smoking cigarettes to less harmful ways of usi ....We will examine the practical feasibility, ethical and public acceptability, and likely cost effectiveness of a number of different ways of reducing tobacco smoking and the harm caused by smoking in Australia. These policy options will include: (1) more restrictive policies towards tobacco products (such as prohibiting tobacco smoking and creating a government monopoly on the manufacture and supply of tobacco); (2) encouraging smokers to switch from smoking cigarettes to less harmful ways of using nicotine, such as using nicotine patches or gum ; (3) using new biotechnologies to improve smokers chances of quitting (e.g. genetic screening of smokers to select the most effective way of helping them to stop smoking and vaccinating ex-smokers against the effects of nicotine); and (4) new biotechnologies that may prevent nonsmokers from beginning to smoke (e.g. vaccinating nonsmokers against the effects of nicotine) or reduce the chances of their developing tobacco-related diseases (e.g. screening the population for genes that predict an increased susceptibility to nicotine dependence and tobacco-related diseases). There is good evidence that vitamin D is important for maintaining healthy bones. There is now a body of work suggesting that it may play a role in other diseases such as cancer, but there is not yet sufficient information to warrant screening the population to determine their vitamin D levels or recommending routine supplementation. The risk of heart disease for women increases significantly with the menopause. New evidence suggests that sedentary behaviour (too much sitting as distinct from too little exercise) is also related to heart disease risk. Ms Howard's PhD research will identify whether TV time and other prolonged sitting pose a particular risk for women during and after the menopause. Her studies will identify whether there is a need for women's health recommendations on reducing sitting time.

Rates of antibiotic resistance are also increasing. The pneumococcus is a complex bacteria, with over 80 known serotypes. Most human disease in Australia is caused by 23 of these serotypes. Australia has an ageing population. The health and wellbeing of the elderly has been identified as a national priority. Rates of antibiotic resistance are also increasing. The pneumococcus is a complex bacteria, with over 80 known serotypes. Most human disease in Australia is caused by 23 of these serotypes. Australia has an ageing population. The health and wellbeing of the elderly has been identified as a national priority. Vaccination and prevention of serious infections, a common cause of illness in the elderly, is an achievable public health goal. The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) of Australia recommends that adults aged 65 years and over should be immunised with 23-valent polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine (PPV). PPV has been available long term in Australia, but the dilemma associated with its use is that it is least effective in those at greatest risk of pneumococcal disease and its complications, the sick elderly population. A new 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV-7) has been available since the end of 2000, but is currently indicated only for children, because it has never been tested in adults. This vaccine uses different technology, and is conjugated to a protein to make it more effective. Clinicals trials of PCV7 have largely been limited to children aged 0-4 years, and have shown it protects 93.9% of children under 2 years of age against invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). Our study aims to look at the efficacy of this new vaccine, currently only registered for children, in the sub-group of the population who are at highest risk for pneumococcal disease - hospitalised elderly. We will vaccinate hospitalised elderly people with PCV or PPV and compare their immune response to the two different vaccines. If PCV is more effective than PPV, this has implications for the development and use of conjuagated pneumococcal vaccines for adults.Read moreRead less

In this world first study, we will test if building the infant skin barrier by using daily regular skin care treatment can reduce the incidence of eczema. If successful, this trial will alter infant skin care practices and reduce the burden of allergic diseases in our community. Furthermore, as infants with eczema having a poor skin barrier, which possibly increases their risk of developing sensitisation, we will test if this intervention reduces the risk of food allergy.
