The Prevalence And Trajectory Of Kidney Disease In Urban Aboriginal Children

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $94,515.00
    Summary
The Study of Environment and Aboriginal Resilience on Child Health is a major NHMRC funded project looking at the health and illness of urban Aboriginal children in Australia. By working together with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services across urban and large regional centres in NSW the study team hope to better understand the causes of common diseases such as kidney and heart disease, and whether these first begin in childhood.

Periodontal Disease And Chronic Kidney Disease Among Aboriginal Adults; An RCT

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,035,550.00
    Summary
Chronic Kidney Disease is a growing public health concern in Australia, especially among Aboriginal populations. It is associated with progression to end stage kidney disease requiring dialysis, cardiovascular disease burden and high mortality. This study will use a randomised controlled trial design to determine if comprehensive periodontal therapy reduces progression of kidney disease among Aboriginal adults with chronic kidney disease residing in Central Australia.

Chronic Kidney Disease And Cardiovascular Disease In Aboriginal Children And Young Adults

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $111,232.00
    Summary
Aboriginal Australians are burdened with a higher level of chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease, which is the greatest contributor to the gap in health between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians. My proposed research aims identify if the increased risk of chronic disease is evident during childhood and adolescence amongst Aboriginal Australians, and to explore if this inequity is largely explained by the social determinants of health.

National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $2,157,075.00
    Summary
This Centre will focus on improving the prevention and management of circulatory and associated diseases in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living in urban areas. The Centre will conduct and promote high quality research that will lead to improved workforce development and training and service delivery to Urban Indigenous populations. The research program will be conducted jointly with the Queensland Aboriginal Islander Health Forum.

The Burden And Risk Factors Of Depressive Disorders In Indigenous Australians: Implications For Early Detection And Prevention

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $318,768.00
    Summary
This Fellowship addresses the high rates of depression amongst Indigenous Australians. The proposed work will quantify the extent to which two major risk factors contribute to the burden of depression in this population and the burden avertable from interventions to modify these risk factors. Findings would inform resource allocation and health service delivery, and in doing so, present opportunities for improvements in the health of Indigenous Australians.

Mobility, Mixing And Infectious Disease Transmission Among Remote-living Indigenous Australians: Addressing A Knowledge Gap To Identify Effective Strategies For Sustained Disease Control

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $340,891.00
    Summary
Indigenous Australians in remote communities experience extremely high rates of infections such as skin sores. I will study the mobility and social interactions of Indigenous people in remote communities in the Northern Territory to better understand how infectious diseases spread throughout these communities. This information will be used in mathematical models to plan the most effective strategies to permanently reduce the burden of infectious diseases among Indigenous Australians.

Burden Of Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) And Impact Of Prevention Strategies: Comprehensive Evidence To Drive The RHD Endgame

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $960,655.00
    Summary
Rheumatic heart disease is chronic damage to the heart valves caused by repeated bouts of acute rheumatic fever. Both are preventable, yet rates among Indigenous Australians are of the highest recorded. We propose to undertake the first multi-jurisdictional study of these conditions to determine trends in occurrence and evaluate the impact of existing interventions in Australia. Findings will be used to inform the development of a roadmap to remove RHD as a public health problem in Australia.
