Summary
High blood pressure is a very significant risk factor for many common cardiovascular diseases. Blood pressure is normally tightly regulated by groups of neurons in the brainstem; although we know that this part of the brain becomes dysfunctional in patients with high blood pressure, we do not understand why. We have recently discovered that cardiovascular control neurons can influence each other. The project will determine the effect of such communication in the control of blood pressure.
Although the heart contracts spontaneously, the rate and force with which it beats may be modified by the autonomic nervous system. That is, the rate and force of heart muscle contraction may be increased or decreased by the activation of two different sets of nerves. This project will determine how the autonomic nervous system modifies the strength of heart muscle contraction. It will involve the measurement of changes in contractile force, electrical activity and calcium levels within cardiac ....Although the heart contracts spontaneously, the rate and force with which it beats may be modified by the autonomic nervous system. Summary
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects ~10-12% of the adult population and is associated with increased mortality. Activation of sympathetic nerves plays an important role in this scenario. We have pioneered a novel catheter-based approach using radiofrequency-energy to disrupt these nerves and we now aim to assess the mechanisms and consequences of applying this novel technology in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Summary
High blood pressure is a major cause of cardiovascular diseases. Currently intervention occurs after the cardiovascular system is damaged. Our interest is in the development of high blood pressure, to determine whether early intervention could stop its progression. We identified that excitation of the sympathetic nervous system by the circuits that control breathing is important. We seek to further understand this interaction to identify novel approaches to treat high blood pressure.
