This equipment will enable experimental vibration measurement up to an unprecedented one billion cycles per second of motion smaller than the width of a helium atom (20 femtometres). Understanding and harnessing the phenomena unique to this regime, especially very large accelerations surpassing one billion times the acceleration of gravity, will enable the development of rapid protein crystallisation techniques and constant-temperature organic chemical reaction enhancement for rapid development of new drugs, new devices for measuring the profile of surfaces at video speeds (videoAFM), new micro- and nano-devices for fluid pumping, mixing, colloidal separation and concentration, and new autonomous nanorobots for non-invasive microsurgery.Read moreRead less
Novel methods for detecting changes in soft tissue microstructure and biomechanical properties using multi-modality MR imaging. This project will lead to novel methods for studying the internal structure of the soft tissues of the body, such as muscles and brain tissue, and how this is affected by mechanical loading and disease states. The project will thoroughly validate these new methods. This will not only provide new techniques for research use, but lead to improved diagnostic techniques in ....Novel methods for detecting changes in soft tissue microstructure and biomechanical properties using multi-modality MR imaging. Australia is strongly investing in nanotechnology and through the governments priority goals 'Frontier Technologies for Building and Transforming Australian Industries' it has been recognised as an important area for investment. This proposal will help develop an internationally recognised nano-industry. It is envisaged that the particles made during this work will have direct implications for the public - creating a new class of medical diagnostic particles with better resolution and specificity. These particles have the potential to diagnose patients more precisely and at an earlier stage than is currently available. Additionally, these particles could be designed to load drugs and hence could be used to treat diseases such as cancer.Read moreRead less

Imagine a laser beam, but not with just one colour, but containing all colours. The light beam thus looks white, somewhat like a search light, except that it is much brighter. We now know how to generate such bright white beams of light, but it is expensive, requiring a small specialized laboratory full of equipment. Through a better understanding, we will make it easier and cheaper to generate these light beams. All kinds of applications that have been known for years, such as medical imaging and chemical analysis, then suddenly become practical. We anticipate that in the future these bright white light beams will be used on a routine basis in Australian hospitals and industry. Read moreRead less

Microfluidics has the potential to revolutionise the way we live. Imagine portable pocket sized devices for cheap and rapid medical diagnostics and drug delivery. Or miniaturised chemical/biological sensors as early warning detection systems against terrorist threats. The research is thus intended to not only commercially benefit various industries, but also to improve the quality of life as a whole by making medical diagnosis or chemical/biological detection more readily accessible, portable and more efficient. Moreover, the fundamental studies, aimed at generating an understanding of the complex physics involved, has generic benefits to researchers in applied physics as well as providing practical protocols for microdevice development.Read moreRead less
Modelling and Measurement of Flow-Structure Dynamics in the Human Upper Airway. Sleep disruption due to the common and disabling conditions of snoring and obstruction of the human upper airway can result in chronic fatigue, lost work and accidents caused by daytime drowsiness. To date the behaviour of the upper airway has not been adequately studied in terms able to reveal the mechanical causes of these conditions. This deficiency is addressed through the development and use of simulation tools ....Modelling and Measurement of Flow-Structure Dynamics in the Human Upper Airway. This deficiency is addressed through the development and use of simulation tools and measurement techniques that will elucidate the flow-structure dynamics leading to new diagnostic and improved treatment methods. Simulating the effect of treatment on any individual will permit it to be chosen to maximise its efficacy for a problem that costs the nation an estimated $2 Billion per year in lost productivity.Read moreRead less

The recent development of the world's first prototype combined MR-PET scanner for human use has prompted immense interest. MR-PET is likely to revolutionize clinical diagnosis and basic research, by providing exquisite structural images co-registered with simultaneous functional PET images. We will exploit the as yet unexplored potential for motion information derived from the MR system to be used to correct the simultaneously acquired PET data for patient motion. This research is an excellent opportunity for Australian researchers to make important contributions to an emerging technology with high economic potential, and will strengthen Australia's international position in engineering and biomedical systems development.Read moreRead less

X-rays are invaluable in medical diagnostics. For example, they are widely used in breast screening programs. However, they can cause cancer even at low doses. Consequently there is a global effort to reduce the X-ray dose by exploring more efficient imaging technologies. The present proposal seeks to exploit our recent discovery of a highly efficient storage phosphor that has the potential to facilitate substantial X-ray dose reduction; this is of greatest significance to the general population. Also, the phosphor facilitates higher resolution images, a feature that is highly important in scientific imaging. This project may lead to substantial revenue streams for the nation because it taps into a global multibillion dollar industry.Read moreRead less

Synchrotron science is a priority area for Australia, the USA, and most first world countries. Development of new ideas and tools for X-ray investigations is the key to future opportunities and is the subject of this proposal. We will develop new techniques for crystallographic electron-density studies, X-ray Anomalous Fine Structure (XAFS) and Multiple-wavelength Anomalous Dispersion (MAD), and provide useful advances for X-ray lithography and radiography. Simultaneous investigation of form factors, absorption coefficients, anomalous dispersion and X-ray scattering will provide new experimental tests of relativistic atomic wavefunction calculations, molecular bonding and solid state coupled cluster theory. Major discrepancies will be resolved.Read moreRead less
