Summary
Despite intensive intervention some individuals with type 1 diabetes develop complications. There remains an urgent need for means to identify patients at risk of complications and new targets and therapies for preventing, arresting, treating and reversing them. The primary objective of the Diabetes Complications Centre of Research Excellence (DC-CRE) is to translate novel experimental findings into preventive/treatment strategies for the management of diabetes and its complications.
Diabetic Retinopathy - Closing The Loop For Diabetic Eye Care And Complication Risk Mitigation

Summary
Indigenous Australians with diabetes are at high risk of vision loss due to diabetic eye disease. Training and implementation of local retinal imaging, regional reading, and web-based systems can improve communication and fragmented service delivery. We will train and evaluate, in an indigenous Australian setting, an open-source remote-access IT solution to improve eye care and outcomes, adaptable to national and international locations.

Summary
Artificial hearts and lungs are increasingly used to support our most critically ill patients. A greater understanding of patient-machine interaction is needed to maximise their life-preserving potential. ACTIONS CRE will research device-related complications, improve device components, develop clinical practice guidelines, train clinical and engineering researchers and explore the cost benefits of this technology ensuring all Australians can access state-of-the-art mechanical life support.

Summary
Medicines have an important place in health and are commonly used for long periods, sometimes life-long. Using medicines wisely requires a careful balance between benefits and harmful effects. Currently, there is limited information to guide medicines use over a lifetime. Using large linked datasets, the CRE in Medicines and Ageing will generate much needed evidence about real world medicines use to support clinical and pharmaceutical policy decisions.
