The influence of conflict and migration on adaptation. This project will develop and test theories about the ways in which violent conflict and migration influence the capacity to adapt to climate changed using case studies from Fiji, Timor-Leste, and Tuvalu.
How migration reshapes labour markets: a study of professional service firms. Australia needs skilled migration to maintain its economic growth and replenish its skill base as the population ages. It needs the skills of migrant accountants. This project will identify the barriers migrants face when seeking work in the financial services industry and discover how migration is changing the financial services labour market.
Filipino-Australians: Networks, Identities, Communities. Today, Australia has over 100,000 Filipino-origin citizens. There are growing trade, diplomatic and security relations between Australia and the Philippines. Both nations have English as a common language, comparable educational systems, and respective elective affinities with the US. Visual Anthropology of settlement among newly arrived refugee youth. The majority of refugees currently arriving in Australia are youth from the middle-East and the Horn of Africa. These young people face major challenges to successful settlement, often having histories of little or no schooling, exposure to violence, and long-term residence in refugee camps. There is a lack of evidence to inform policy and practice on how to best support these young people. After the deluge: revisiting displacement and resettlement at the Three Gorges Dam, China. The three Gorges Dam project in China displaced 1.13 million people. This project will investigate what happened to those evicted and draw lessons for the nations and institutions that operationalise the displacement of some 10 million people each year.
Fluid security in the Asia Pacific. At a time of global and regional insecurity fuelled by economic and terrorism concerns, this project will provide a rigorous evidence base for the Asia Pacific to better manage mobility in a more inclusive way. This directly fits with understanding our region and the world by providing an evidence base for better understanding of how and why people move throughout the Asia Pacific and their impact and experiences of security.
