All legal researchers in Australia, and any other common law jurisdictions, need access to case law from the whole of the common law world for their research to be complete. Australian society benefits from better academic and professional research on common law issues. CommonLII's database coverage of the whole common law world, and its free access citator tracking the interconnections between cases will transform the common law research capacities of all legal researchers. CommonLII will also provide Australian leadership in development of legal information systems in the Commonwealth and the common law world.Read moreRead less
Developing negotiation decision support systems that promote constructive relationships following disputes. The development of negotiation support systems that focus upon complying with notions of equity, rather than mere integrative bargaining, will lead to more durable outcomes, meaning negotiated settlements will not be discarded and constantly re-litigated. The development of negotiation support systems that focus upon complying with notions of equity, rather than mere integrative bargaining, will lead to more durable outcomes, meaning negotiated settlements will not be discarded and constantly re-litigated. Our development of appropriate systems will provide disputants with information and knowledge that will lead to the continuation of constructive relationships following disputes and reduce the magnitude and extent of conflicts. This will lead to significant cost savings in the administration of justice as well as reduced legal fees. It will result in more harmonious communities - especially in families and body corporates.Read moreRead less
Trust and Safety in Autonomous Mobility Systems: A Human-centred Approach. This project aims to understand the link between trust, safety, and the public acceptance of driverless cars. This project aims to understand the link between trust, safety, and the public acceptance of driverless cars. The uptake of autonomous mobility systems relies upon public trust. Recent injuries, and even a fatality, have highlighted the risks they pose to pedestrians in particular. The project investigates new interfaces for improving public trust and pedestrial safety by allowing vehicles to communicate with the people around them. Along the way, it develops a validated approach for simulating real interactions with autonomous vehicles in a virtual-reality environment. Benefits include strategies for making driverless cars safer for pedestrians and a new approach for testing solutions to this emerging problem in a low-cost, low-risk way.Read moreRead less
Development of Knowledge Discovery for High Dimensional Biomedical Data. The recent progress in experimental techniques of molecular genetics has made available a wealth of genome data and raised the interest for analysis of DNA sequences. The recent progress in experimental techniques of molecular genetics has made available a wealth of genome data and raised the interest for analysis of DNA sequences. As the human and mouse genome projects are in a phase of systematic sequencing, computational tools based on concepts used in science fields have recently played a prominent role. Significant contributions to this project will increasingly depend upon original application and development of algorithms for the analysis of genomic data, and of the computational systems that support them. These challenges have fostered major progress in computer science, leading to collaborative research of global significance.Read moreRead less
Shared-space interactions between people and autonomous vehicles. This project aims to understand how autonomous vehicles in urban environments need to interact with the people that they share those spaces with. This project aims to understand how autonomous vehicles in urban environments need to interact with the people that they share those spaces with. Autonomous vehicles that are able to operate in shared spaces, such as campuses and pedestrian zones, promise to improve urban life. However, their uptake depends heavily on public acceptance as they operate in close proximity to people. The project investigates whether people are more likely to trust the technology and feel safe if they are able to understand how the system makes decisions and to directly influence its behaviour. Outcomes are expected to promote safe behaviour around urban robotic applications and accelerate the uptake of autonomous systems in Australia’s cities. Read moreRead less

Cloud computing is a recent computing paradigm which can offer workflow with services via virtualised resources from the Internet. This project develops new technology with a novel cloud workflow architecture and its corresponding innovative mechanisms for managing millions of process instances effectively. The success of this project will build and foster long-term collaboration with the industry partner. The research conducted with this project will position Australia as a world leader in this area. The intellectual property resulting from project outcomes will potentially benefit many Australian organisations with similar nature for e-business like insurance and banking processes, and e-government like Medicare and Centrelink processes.Read moreRead less

Other areas, such as films, computer games, user interface design that involves storyboarding and visualization may also benefit from sketching in virtual reality. Further research may be carried out using a variety of VR facilities and a responsive workbench (3D interactive table-top display) to allow distributed Virtual Prototyping between geographically separated design teams, to assemble the product drawn using a force feedback device to place Australia in a leading position.Read moreRead less

This project aims to enhance discovery, productivity and translation within and between disciplines in Australian research through better utilisation of big data. Advances in our ability to capture, store, process and analyse large data sets are transforming many parts of society, including the research sector. Machine learning, for example, will allow data-driven analysis of massive, unstructured data sets such as social media archives or financial records in ways that will shed new light on many complex research questions. This project will map existing capability and infrastructure within and across disciplines, identify common and discipline-specific practices, challenges and opportunities, and assess technology, infrastructure, training and collaboration priorities for Australia.

Thanks to the proliferation of the Internet and web technologies, it is now possible to exploit the power of these technologies to facilitate the cooperation of teams of workers across distances. Such virtual teams and virtual enterprises are expected to overcome many problems associated in the modern service industry spanning continents. Countries (such as Australia) that are located far from the main markets (e,g, Europe and North America) stand to gain substantially from successful deployment of such virtual organisations. Researchers from UNSW and LORIA France have been working together on the development of cooperative management models for virtual enterprises. This application seeks funding for the travel of researchers across these countries to facilitate this research.Read moreRead less
