Population and development in Indonesia: achieving greater certainty for evidence-based policy making. Social and economic planning in Indonesia is problematic because of a lack of consensus regarding the demography of the world’s fourth most populous nation. This project brings together technical demographic expertise in Australia and Indonesia to resolve this dilemma and to inform evidence-based policy making.

A demographic and socio-medical history of the Aboriginal People of Victoria 1800-2000: reconstitutions and epidemiological analysis. We have produced a world-first historical demographic and epidemiological database that will be of continuing cultural and professional value to the Indigenous and research communities, and which can be copied to capture elusive mobile populations that are better identified genealogically than via conventional census methods. Interviewing 3,000 young adult Indonesians at two points in time, this project examines whether their economic and social outcomes change across time or whether early experience determines longer-term outcomes. What are the factors involved in transition to adulthood among young people in a rapidly developing metropolis of a developing country?

Are we seeing a shift of these milestones from “cornerstones” that lay the foundations for accomplishment to “capstones” that depend on economics accomplishments in areas such as employment? This study of the long term demographic consequences of Asian disasters will contribute to development of more effective governmental policies on disaster mitigation, preparedness and reconstruction/recovery, thus assisting to reduce the human and material losses from natural disasters.
Diggers to Veterans: risk, resilience and recovery. What really happened to the Diggers after the war? In this centenary year of Gallipoli, it is still not known. It is not known how long they lived nor how they compared in health and family formation to civilians. Did some recover from trauma and exposures over time? Did the Repatriation Scheme and medical care make a difference? What social and biological characteristics may have affected risk, resilience and recovery? This project examines the roles of government policies and social changes on childbearing preferences and behaviours in the 2000's and in doing so contributes to a sustainable Australia by informing family and population policy.
