Summary
Blood and lymphatic vessels are vital components of the cardiovascular system. Abnormalities in the growth and development of these vessels are associated with human disorders including cancer and cardiovascular disease. The focus of this application is to characterise the role of the ubiquitin protein ligase Nedd4 in vascular development, with the aim of identifying targets to which novel therapeutics for the treatment of blood and lymphatic vascular diseases could be generated.

Summary
1 in 1000 children are born with a small jaw, which requires invasive surgery for treatment. We identified that defects in blood vessel development in the jaw underlie some cases of these craniofacial defects. We found that factors secreted from the major artery in the jaw can promote jaw growth, and our research proposal aims to identify what exactly these factors are. These factors have the potential to be used to therapeutically treat children with a small jaw to help it grow correctly.

Summary
Lymphatic vessels are a vital component of the cardiovascular system. Abnormalities in the growth and development of lymphatic vessels are associated with human disorders including cancer, lymphoedema and inflammatory diseases. The focus of this application is to characterise signals that direct the construction of lymphatic vessels, with the aim of identifying targets to which novel therapeutics for the treatment of lymphatic vascular diseases could be generated.

Summary
Children with Saethre-Chotzen syndrome exhibit premature fussed coronal sutures, and other skull/ skeletal malformations. Surgical intervention is the only treatment option to ensure optimal cognitive and skeletal development. Our studies have identified a candidate molecular pathway that regulates bone formation by cranial bone cells from these patients. Targeting these key molecular signalling components with chemical inhibitors will help prevent the premature fusion of cranial sutures.
Punish them or engage them? Identifying and addressing productive and unproductive student behaviours in South Australian schools. This project will provide a contemporary understanding of productive and unproductive student behaviour, which is a key educational concern in Australia. Evidence will be obtained to inform educational decisions to engage and promote positive student behaviour and improve academic achievement.

Infertility is common and although IVF is widely accepted, the procedure is expensive and is associated with health risks. Using laboratory animals, we have developed significant new insights into mechanisms regulating egg quality. These insights have allowed us to develop a new approach to infertility treatment - crucially, one that eliminates the need for ovarian hormone therapy used in IVF. This project will investigate the basic mechanisms underlying our new approach to enable safe clinical ....Infertility is common and although IVF is widely accepted, the procedure is expensive and is associated with health risks. Sustaining effective educational initiatives. This project aims to investigate how educational initiatives can be sustained over the long term. Schools and early childhood and care services deliver programmes to develop students' social and emotional wellbeing, promote mental health, prevent bullying and address eating disorders. However, effective initiatives often fade away when start-up resources run out. This project will review models of implementation and provide exemplars of good practice ....Sustaining effective educational initiatives. Infertility is common and although IVF is widely accepted, the procedure is expensive and is associated with health risks. Using laboratory animals, we have made significant advances towards developing new technologies that can mature eggs and produce embryos in vitro, but without women receiving hormone injections. This project will seek means to combine the benefits of two of our existing technologies into one integrated system, to provide hormone-free infertility treatment.
Keeping the best: how school leaders engage and retain high quality early career teachers. This project will investigate how school leaders use micropolitical strategies to engage and retain high quality early career teachers. It will develop a framework for school leaders to guide policies and practices to keep the best early career teachers in the profession.
Normal heart development before birth. This project aims to understand how the fetal heart can develop normally with much less oxygen than an adult heart uses. Regulation of fetal heart proliferation is not well understood but changes in oxygen levels and non-coding RNAs are implicated. Regulation of fetal heart proliferation is not well understood but changes in oxygen levels and non-coding RNAs are implicated. Using advanced imaging techniques to measure blood flow in blood vessels to the fetal heart and molecular probes to assess cell function and microarrays to measure non-coding RNA, the project expects to generate new knowledge about mechanisms of fetal heart cell proliferation. Ultimately, this new knowledge could lead to non-invasive approaches to detect and treat abnormal fetal heart growth in animals and humans.Read moreRead less
