Precision low energy experiments to search for new physics. This project aims to give experimental answers to long existing theoretical questions about the origins and nature of dark matter. Dark matter is a fundamental component of the universe, yet the nature of its composition is still unknown. There is growing evidence that dark matter is comprised of low mass and weakly interacting particles. This project aims to give experimental answers to long existing theoretical questions about the origins and nature of dark matter. Dark matter is a fundamental component of the universe, yet the nature of its composition is still unknown. There is growing evidence that dark matter is comprised of low mass and weakly interacting particles. By developing ultra-precise measurement tools and new techniques, this project aims to perform a stringent and comprehensive new laboratory search for ultra-light dark matter particles, over likely mass ranges not yet searched. The knowledge gained will provide economic benefits through commercialisation and stimulation of new research and development, and to defence through applications in radar, communications and sensing.Read moreRead less

Australian contribution to CERN large hadron collider experiment upgrade: The discovery of the Higgs Boson with the ATLAS experiment at the CERN laboratory's large hadron collider, has been a highlight for Australian science. Scientists will build upon the foundation of the Higgs discovery to further probe the nature of matter at the finest scales and highest energies. Detailed measurements of the Higgs characteristics will determine if it is as predicted by the Standard Model or whether it admits a variation, signalling new physics. The upgrade in this project will provide for such detailed measurements. It will also allow sensitive probes of new physics, searching for new particles or unexpected interactions.Read moreRead less
New generation nanostructured coatings with combined control of spectral and angular emissivity. The aim of this project is to generate a complete scientific understanding of a new generation of hybrid, tri-layered, optically-selective coatings. The new design paradigm combines the very different attributes of smooth and nanostructured layers so that superior and simultaneous control of both spectral and angular properties of light can be achieved. Existing theory will be extended so that quantitative analyses of these new systems and other hybrids become possible and new and improved fabrication techniques will be developed. The work will unlock new technological possibilities for coating performance and application and is likely to be associated with significant improvements in energy conservation and generation. This quantum technology is one of three key areas of improvement planned for the gravitational wave detector, LIGO Voyager. The project will enhance the sensitivity and the reach of gravitational wave astronomy and cosmology, and improve the fidelity and reach of gravitational wave observations. Technologies developed may find application in other areas of precision measurements and gravitational wave observations .Read moreRead less
PET imaging of learning-related plasticity in awake behaving rats. The objective of the project is to combine an investigation of basic learning paradigms with functional Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging in rats in order to answer critical questions about the neurobiological basis of learning and decision-making in the brain. The objective of the project is to combine an investigation of basic learning paradigms with functional Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging in rats in order to answer critical questions about the neurobiological basis of learning and decision-making in the brain. MicroPET technology provides PET images without the confounds induced by anaesthesia. Using this technology, the project intends to observe whole-brain changes in dopamine neurotransmission in awake, behaving rats while they learn to predict motivationally relevant outcomes based on environmental cues and on their own actions (ie during Pavlovian and instrumental conditioning, respectively). The outcomes of this research may improve our understanding of the neural changes responsible for debilitating disorders of the brain and mind.Read moreRead less

This project aims to address the challenge of effectively enabling novice users to train robots on complex tasks using instructional methods and gamification. With the recent advances of AI research, robots have now better cognitive and functional skills, research in robot training also now allows them to learn interactively from human. Since these robots are expected to provide assistance in different domains including education and healthcare, it is crucial to effectively engage human in robot’s instruction. Expected outcomes include new methods for trainers to assess robot learning, and to improve their engagement and feedback. This should provide significant human-robot interaction benefits for accessibility of learning robots.Read moreRead less
