Search is a key component of a vast range of computing applications. However, while search on large collections of general-purpose text is well-understood, and the best systems are highly effective, search on smaller or special-purpose collections is much less reliable and has attracted relatively little research. By identifying general ways of using context such as user history or prior page usefulness, the quality of search in such cases can be greatly improved. Products that make use of these principles will provide greater workplace efficiency and be able to locate information that other search tools cannot identify.Read moreRead less

The proposed initiative brings together relevant sectors of the nanomaterials, biomaterials and electrochemistry research communities. It is envisaged that the collective complementary expertise will give rise to research opportunities and insights into the emerging work of electro-bio-nano. Scientific and technological challenges that exist in this multidiscipline research space include areas as diverse as the development of more efficient nerve cell communication implants, understanding and control of biocorrosion/biofouling and the use of biomimicry to produce more efficient catalysts and artificial muscles.Read moreRead less
ARC Centre for Nanostructured Electromaterials. Electromaterials transport electrons or ions and facilitate charge transfer, underpinning most energy capture/storage processes and cell communication. We propose a national Centre to develop nanostructured electromaterials with exceptional properties. The Centre aims to synthesise novel nanomaterials and assemble them into innovative nanoscale devices. We will exploit these materials to enhance performance in energy conversion/storage systems (eg. ....ARC Centre for Nanostructured Electromaterials. We propose a national Centre to develop nanostructured electromaterials with exceptional properties. The Centre aims to synthesise novel nanomaterials and assemble them into innovative nanoscale devices. We will exploit these materials to enhance performance in energy conversion/storage systems (eg. photovoltaics, batteries, including wearable systems), and novel energy transfer in bioapplications (eg. Bionic Ear). These advances, together with the resource of trained personnel, will assist Australian industry to exploit this exciting area.Read moreRead less
Design and Synthesis of Ionic Liquids for Use in Photoelectrochemical Cells Based on Inherently Conducting Polymers. We propose to evaluate the electrochemistry of photoactive polythiophenes recently synthesised by us in a range of ionic liquids. This knowledge will be used to design and synthesise customised ionic liquids with the properties required to enhance the photoelectrochemical efficiency of devices based on substituted polythiophenes. We expect our findings to lead to the development ....Design and Synthesis of Ionic Liquids for Use in Photoelectrochemical Cells Based on Inherently Conducting Polymers. Catastrophic failure of the Ariane 5 rocket in 1996 and the inability of Patriot missile systems to reach their targets during the 1991 Gulf war were both attributed to numerical computing errors. Less dramatic, but in a similar vein, this project aims to study the numerical stability of contemporary computational molecular science applications. The focus will be on linear scaling electronic structure codes, methods that are critical to the study of nano- and bio-materials, and are therefore of great importance to our economic future and medical well being. The project will build expertise within Australia in the area of interval arithmetic, an area that is currently poorly represented.Read moreRead less
Non-Parametric Modelling of Motion and Depth fields with Boundary Geometry for Scalable Compression and Dissemination. Applications for large format video surveillance are about to grow rapidly, starting with military applications and then moving into the civilian arena, highlighting the importance of compression for interactive dissemination, so as to make best use of limited communication channels. This project will develop an innovative representation for motion and depth/elevation maps, which addresses a key obstacle in the deployment of technology for efficient interactive access to large format video and geospatial imagery. These applications are relevant to Australia's defence and infrastructure for smart information use. Moreover, this is a strategic proposal to strengthen Australia's existing lead in aspects of interactive media dissemination.Read moreRead less

Highly scalable video compression is critical to the emergence of new applications in video distribution and management. Examples include interactive remote browsing of video and robust video surveillance over shared networks. Previous ARC funding produced fundamental breakthroughs in scalable video compression, resulting in a new paradigm which has been adopted by leading researchers in the field. The present project addresses the two most important problems which currently limit the potential of this paradigm. Inspired by the applicant's recent discoveries, the outcomes of this project are likely to represent significant scientific breakthroughs and contribute to a new international video coding standard.Read moreRead less
