Advancing uncertainty prioritisation in water resource management. This project aims to develop a holistic framework for prioritisation of uncertainties in Integrated Water Resource Assessment and Management to assist water resource analysts and planners to improve sustainability of water resource management outcomes. The framework will help scientists, consultants, policy makers and water users better select which sources of uncertainty to address in their work, with what resources, and what methods. Expected outcomes are novel analytical methods to evaluate current practice in uncertainty prioritisation, communicate when and how to use established and novel uncertainty management techniques, and improve prioritisation of uncertainty using proof-of-concept model-based analyses. The project should improve decision making in policy and industry, and societal and environmental outcomes of water management.

Earth and Ocean Informatics and Technology Network (EON-ITnet). Sustainable resource exploration and mining onshore, as well as marine planning, exploration, and defence depend on effective cross-disciplinary investigation, sharing of expertise and technologies for integration and computational analysis of multidimensional data spaces. EON-ITNET will cross-fertilise the use of artificial intelligence, advanced computing and smart information sharing for management, analysis, visualisation and metadata modelling between these traditionally separate research groups, with the outcome of improving research efficiency and lowering costs. EON-ITNET will form an alliance with the Caltech-based GeoFramework, which is advancing a novel object-oriented data analysis environment, binding community software for Earth visualisation and simulation to 4D data bases.

Integrated Water Management in the Lower Richmond Catchment. Water quality in Richmond River estuary, NSW, is of critical concern to fishing, aquaculture, tourism and recreation industries. Upland horticulture on the Alstonville Plateau and drained acid sulfate soils in lowland floodplains discharge nutrient-rich, acidic water to the estuary. Previous studies have treated floodplains, upland and estuary separately. This study will develop an integrated catchment approach to water management in the Lower Richmond by treating surface water and groundwater as a single resource. The whole-of-system approach will help mitigate socio-economic and environment impacts of nutrient-rich and acidic drainage waters. It will be transferable to other "hot spots" in Australia.

New approach to sensitivity assessment of complex simulation models for environmental management. The aims are (1) to develop new techniques that improve and extend the capabilities of sensitivity analysis of large and complex computer models for environmental management; and (2) with the industry partners, to test these techniques on models for salinity management in the Murray-Darling Basin. The project's significance is in providing new techniques able to answer a range of model users? questions at acceptable computational cost, for complex models with outputs measured in a wide variety of ways. The outcomes will be new sensitivity assessment tools and experience of their use in an environmental application of great importance to Australia.

    $450,000.00
    Summary
Integrated Greenhouse Gas Measurement System (IGMS) for monitoring agricultural emissions at field to regional scales. Measurement of greenhouse gases is critical to Australia’s obligations to reduce carbon emissions. The measurement facility will provide urgently needed accurate emission data from Australian agriculture to establish emission baselines and develop methods to extend the point-scale measurements to whole farm, regional and national scales.
