Diabetes & Antenatal Milk Expressing (DAME): A Randomised Controlled Trial

Funding Amount

Summary
Infants of women with diabetes in pregnancy have an increased risk of low blood sugar and other complications after birth and of developing diabetes and being obese later in life. Many maternity providers encourage these women to express breast milk before birth to have it available if the infant needs supplementary feeding. Evidence for this practice is lacking so we are planning the first study exploring the safety and effectiveness of antenatal expression of breast milk in late pregnancy for ....Infants of women with diabetes in pregnancy have an increased risk of low blood sugar and other complications after birth and of developing diabetes and being obese later in life. Treating Hyperglycaemia In Diabetes With Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Analogues
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$602,260.00
Summary
Diabetes, characterised by elevated blood glucose, has a major impact on affected children, their families and the community. Our preliminary evidence suggests that a newly developed polyunsaturated fatty acid normalises blood glucose levels in an experimental diabetes model. This research will attempt to provide evidence that we have discovered a fat which has insulin like action and which may be taken orally once every 3-4 days to treat the elevated blood glucose.
Early Environmental Determinants Of Pancreatic Islet Autoimmunity: A Pregnancy To Early Life Cohort Study In Children At Risk Of Type 1 Diabetes

Funding Amount
$1,124,069.00
Summary
The doubling in incidence of type 1 diabetes in children over the last 20 years may be explained by our modern environment, including excessive weight gain in pregnancy and early life, inadequate dietary omega- 3 fatty acids or vitamin D, or viral infections. We therefore aim to study children with a family member with type 1 diabetes from the pregnancy and through early childhood to determine the effects of the environment on their risk of developing type 1 diabetes .This will lead to strategie ....The doubling in incidence of type 1 diabetes in children over the last 20 years may be explained by our modern environment, including excessive weight gain in pregnancy and early life, inadequate dietary omega- 3 fatty acids or vitamin D, or viral infections. Epigenetic Determinants Of Nephropathy In Adults With Type 1 Diabetes
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$532,118.00
Summary
The prevention and successful management of diabetic complications are issues of utmost importance for the health of Australians. We hypothesize that epigenetic pathways partly determine why some individuals with diabetes develop complications of their disease, while others do not, despite a similar duration of diabetes, treatment intensity and mean glucose exposure.
Beige fat is a recently described kind of fat which instead of storing fat and contributing to obesity burns energy and burns glucose. It helps to combat obesity and diabetes. If it could be increased and switched on, it would help to treat obesity and diabetes. This grant will study a new pathway to try to increase the amount of beige fat and to increase its activity.
Preventing Adverse Effects Of Matrix Metalloproteinases In Diabetic Wound Healing

Summary
Treatment of diabetic foot ulcers presents a significant challenge to diabetic patients and the health care system. Despite concerted treatment, many ulcers do not heal and it is this failure to heal which eventually leads to deep-seated infection and amputation. For these reasons development of new therapeutic strategies to improve wound healing in diabetes is of critical importance. Protein Preloads To Improve Postprandial Glycaemia In Type 2 Diabetes
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$624,458.00
Summary
Taking a high protein drink can substantially lower the blood glucose rise after a subsequent meal in people with type 2 diabetes. We will examine whether regular use of protein drinks before meals can be effective for improving long-term blood glucose control. Such an approach could represent an exciting new nutritional strategy for managing this increasingly common disorder.
Vitamin D, Bone Loss, Fracture And Mortality Outcome
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$408,736.00
Summary
Vitamin D most commonly from sunlight exposure is considered an important determinant of health, including the liability to falls and fractures; not only in the elderly but in adulthood in general. This study aims to distinguish if low vitamin D levels cause adverse health outcomes or relate to ill health, limited sunlight exposure and nutritional change. Only if low vitamin D level is causative of ill health does replacement make good public health sense.
Pregnancy And Neonatal Diabetes Outcomes In Remote Australia (PANDORA) Cohort
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$2,395,410.00
Summary
The PANDORA study is a longitudinal birth cohort study recruited from a clinical register of Northern Territory women with diabetes in pregnancy (DIP). We will also recruit a comparator group of mothers without DIP and babies. Follow-up of mothers and infants to 3 years post-delivery will be from medical records, questionnaires and clinical assessment. Rates of progression to type 2 diabetes will be assessed among mothers, and growth, feeding patterns and diabetes risk markers among infants.
Elucidating The Pathogenic Role Of Rotavirus Infection In Type 1 Diabetes Development
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$535,579.00
Summary
Rotavirus infection is the main cause of severe diarrhoea in children, and has been implicated in accelerated progression of genetically at-risk children towards type 1 diabetes in two independent studies. My group has further discovered that rotavirus also accelerates diabetes onset in mice in a novel immunological process. In this project, we will determine the mechanism behind this disease exacerbation in the mice, to facilitate understanding of the process in children.
