Summary
The bacterial associated oral diseases; periodontitis and caries are major public health problems. The prevalence of these diseases and increasing bacterial antibiotic resistance has meant there is a need to develop new therapies. This project addresses this by modifying a novel class of antibiotics/antiseptics �antimicrobial peptides� to target oral bacteria and testing them using a newly developed screening method. This project will lead to new therapies for periodontitis and caries.
The Centre for Research Excellence in Nursing Interventions for Hospitalised Patients will provide evidence to improve the nursing care of a broad range of hospitalised patients who are at risk of complications related to compromised skin integrity and poor pain/anxiety management. Systematic reviews and clinical trials will provide the basis for developing clinical practice guidelines to assist nurses in providing high quality care to the 3.5 million Australians admitted to hospital each year.

Summary
High quality, evidence-based guidelines for preventive activities and for the implementation of prevention in general practice have been developed by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and other bodies, yet available information suggests that many patients miss out on evidence-based preventive care. This project aims to evaluate current practice and develop a model of practice aimed at improving the implementation of preventive guidelines in general practice.

Advanced micro-architecture and nanotopography for enhanced tissue growth in scaffolds. Tissue engineering scaffolds offer an urgently needed synthetic biomaterials solution to overcome disease transmission from donor transplants. Migrant and refugee victims of domestic violence (DV) are at grave risk of harm and murder and under-identified in primary care. The Harmony partnership builds on evidence-based models of DV response, to trial an innovative intervention of culturally competent and safe care in general practices with significant numbers of migrant patients. Harmony will result in data platforms that enhance assessment and care plans for DV victims, and safer outcomes for those from vulnerable populations.
