No place like home? A phenomenology of racialised non-belonging. Racism is a persistent problem in Australian society, yet its existential effects remain inadequately understood. This project aims to develop a new understanding of racism’s deep impact on one’s sense of self, and sense of place. The project seeks to use the emerging framework of critical phenomenology to illuminate different experiences of racialised non-belonging. This project aims to develop a new understanding of racism’s deep impact on one’s sense of self, and sense of place. The project seeks to use the emerging framework of critical phenomenology to illuminate different experiences of racialised non-belonging. Expected outcomes include an improved understanding of the ontological significance of feeling not at home in one’s environs, or in one’s own body. By focusing on the idea of the 'cosmopolitan' as it arises in the Australian context, and particularly with respect to the built environment (often neglected ....Between the Outback and the Sea: The Place of Cosmopolitanism in Contemporary Australia. 'Place' is an increasingly contested and problematic notion. In contemporary Australia, it arises as a central issue in relations between the indigenous and the 'settled'; between the refugee and the citizen; between the regional and the international. By focusing on the idea of the 'cosmopolitan' as it arises in the Australian context, and particularly with respect to the built environment (often neglected in favour of the concepts of 'land' or 'wilderness'), the project will enable a reconfiguration of the significance and meaning of place for ideas of citizenship and identity.

The social ontology of personhood: a recognition-theoretical approach. This project pursues the hypothesis that what distinguishes human persons from animals is a certain form of sociality consisting of 'attitudes of recognition'. Understanding the role of these attitudes in the coming about and flourishing of human persons and their communities is essential for fostering the social fabric of multicultural Australia.
Selfless Minds: A cross-cultural theory with relevance for mindfulness . This project aims to provide a comprehensive philosophical and cognitive model of the sense of self. The project combines Abhidharma-Buddhist philosophy and cognitive sciences to propose a new model of subjectivity and agency, without postulating the existence of subjects or agents. The expected outcome is a new understanding of the mind as the locus of agency and moral responsibility.
