Reason to Care: making the care needs of migrants visible to social policy. Migration produces re-configurations of care arrangements within households and communities that are often invisible to social policy yet crucial to the welfare of society. This project aims to make the care needs of migrants visible to social policy by analysing the care practices of Ethiopian migrants in Lebanon and in Australia. This project aims to make the care needs of migrants visible to social policy by analysing the care practices of Ethiopian migrants in Lebanon and in Australia. The project also aims to produce an innovative re-conceptualisation of how migrants' care practices are shaped by households, communities, the state and the market within three diverse social policy regimes. The role of community connectedness in retaining skilled migrant women in Australia. Australia faces a severe skills shortage in areas central to its social fabric and that are traditionally dominated by women: nursing, childcare and teaching. While we are successful in attracting skilled migrants to fill these gaps, one third choose to leave Australia within 5 years. Aboriginal Femininity and Modern Identity: Gender and Race in the Late Colonial Visual Scene. The project is the first sustained cultural history of Aboriginal femininity in Australian from 1870-1967. It will draw on diverse forms of modern visual culture: painting, black and white drawing, mass commodity spectacle, film and photography, to investigate six modes of production of Aboriginal feminine visibility: the 'primitive' woman in Western exhibiting practices such as colonial museums: the pe ....Aboriginal Femininity and Modern Identity: Gender and Race in the Late Colonial Visual Scene. The Just-in-Time Self: Young Men, Skill and Narratives of Aspiration in the New Economy. Employers and policy-makers frequently lament the 'skills gap': the shortage of workers with the skills required to perform the available jobs. This cannot be solved simply by funding more vocational training courses. To improve participation in training it is important to understand how vocational aspirations are formed. This project aims to advance our understanding of this phenomenon through a study of rural Chinese women's experiences of migration to the city, and in particular, the effects of migration upon their sense of identity, worldview and relationships with others.
