This project introduces the concept of infrastructural biographies to revisit the history of remote community formations from the self-determination era to today. Using ethnographic approaches to understand infrastructural legacies, it aims to interrogate the governance and hardware requirements for supporting Indigenous residents to stay on country. The project will produce four case studies capturing community resilience ....Staying on Country: Infrastructure Needs for Remote Community Viability. The proposed SRI brings together research leaders from across 22 Universities and multiple disciplines including history, politics, anthropology, international relations, law, education and studies in culture, society, media, communications, migration, gender, regionalism, heritage, and Indigenous societies. Outcomes include masterclasses and workshops aimed at training team members and mentoring graduate and postdoctoral researchers. The project involves the migration of the management of the Australian Public Intellectual Network http://www.api-network.com to the SRI, which will become its primary stakeholder and developer. A cultural history of West Australian popular music, 1945 to 2010. The Valentines, The Triffids, The John Butler Trio all had their origins in the western Australian musical scene. This is the first cultural history of West Australia's popular music industry. It documents the life and times of its musical artists, bands, managers, recording studios, relevant radio programs since 1945.
Old Atrocities, New Media: Terror Images and the Visual-Military Complex. This research centres on the relations between twenty-first century visual technologies and the age-old practice of the massacre-atrocity. It takes as its major case study the atrocities at the end of the war in Sri Lanka in 2009. The most graphic form of knowledge about these mass deaths and rapes was produced through digitally transmitted visual images.
