The causes and consequences of the great famines of the last two centuries in Russia, China, Ireland and elsewhere. Famines have huge human, economic, social and cultural costs. Growing Australian: domesticating native plants. This project is a pioneering study of the history and meanings of growing Australian native plants. It asserts the importance of the garden in ensuring an environmentally sustainable future and argues that in order to promote more environmentally responsible gardening practices, the history of Australian cultural attitudes towards native gardens must be understood, as must the ongoing resistance to gardening with native plants. The project will a ....Growing Australian: domesticating native plants. This project is a pioneering study of the history and meanings of growing Australian native plants. It asserts the importance of the garden in ensuring an environmentally sustainable future and argues that in order to promote more environmentally responsible gardening practices, the history of Australian cultural attitudes towards native gardens must be understood, as must the ongoing resistance to gardening with native plants. Sentimental blokes: a cultural history of working-class masculinities in Australia, 1850-1929. For decades now, therapists, academics and activists have called for Australian men to be more emotionally articulate. This is necessary in part because stereotypes of Australian masculinity emphasise hostility towards emotion, especially sentimental emotion. By demonstrating the significance of masculine sentimentality in Australia's past, this project will help to change this. Summary
Shoal waters: estuary histories, local knowledge and sustainable fishing in Eastern Australia. Estuaries all along Eastern Australia are subject to two hundred years of pressure from changing human populations, which has put fish and their environments at risk. This project provides an innovative framework for sharing scientific and local knowledge to contribute new ways of planning for the future of estuary fishing.
