Reconceiving Australian federalism: fundamental values, comparative models and constitutional interpretation. Through systematic comparison with other federal systems, this project identifies the range of fundamental principles and values that could underlie the Australian system of government, explores their application to the interpretation of the Australian Constitution and scrutinises proposed reforms to the Australian system on the basis of that analysis.
Constitutional resilience in South Asian democracies. This project aims to find out whether constitutional design could, and should, be used to make constitutional democracies more resilient. Democratic constitutionalism is facing serious challenges, not only in new fragile democracies, but also older established ones. The project will investigate the role that the constitutional accommodation of salient ethnocultural and ideological groups, the autonomy of non-partisan constitutional watchdog i ....Constitutional resilience in South Asian democracies. This project aims to find out whether constitutional design could, and should, be used to make constitutional democracies more resilient. Democratic constitutionalism is facing serious challenges, not only in new fragile democracies, but also older established ones. The project will investigate the role that the constitutional accommodation of salient ethnocultural and ideological groups, the autonomy of non-partisan constitutional watchdog institutions, and the adaptability of the constitution to changing circumstances could play in securing its resilience against serious threats. Relying on conceptual and empirical methods, using case studies from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, to answer these questions, the project will produce a better understanding of constitutional resilience, and the features that promote it to allow constitution makers and reformers to better protect democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Intellectual property and climate change: inventing clean technologies. By providing recommendations about intellectual property law, policy and practice to policy-makers and stakeholders, this project will promote research and development of clean technologies in Australia. It will also facilitate the transfer of such technologies in Australia and to developing countries and least developed countries.
Administrative justice in China: harnessing the rule of law to deal with citizen complaints against official misconduct. Ongoing conflicts between citizens and government officials in China pose a serious threat to the country’s social stability. Dealing fairly and efficiently with citizens’ complaints of administrative misconduct is a core component of China’s commitment to good governance and the rule of law. The emerging international law of terrorism. This project examines how international law responds to terrorism and critiques the legitimacy and effectiveness of those responses. The project will improve the international community's knowledge about the effective regulation of terrorist violence within a rule of law framework, and identify opportunities for improving international responses.

Moving with dignity: a human rights approach to slow-onset climate change-related displacement and relocation in the Pacific. At the international, regional and national levels, climate change-related displacement poses a significant challenge to law and policymakers. This project examines potential legal responses to displacement resulting from slow-onset climate change and, in particular, the feasibility of en masse relocation of whole communities in the Pacific.

This project aims to undertake a longitudinal study examining how women of diverse backgrounds use law to help them live a life free of violence.
