Wireless sensor and communication networks with fixed and mobile nodes are rapidly becoming essential technologies for hostile environmental monitoring, battlefield surveillance and precision agriculture. However, due to the complexities associated with interconnected design issues involving sensors, autonomous vehicles and communication protocols, even very simple networks have proven to be difficult to design. This project proposes to intelligently employ higher capabilities of mobile nodes and develop methods for rapid deployment, maintenance and routing that are aware of location, energy, and security. The outcomes of this project will form the basis for design of intelligent wireless networks for defence and civilian applications.Read moreRead less

Beamforming with acoustic vector sensors for audio user interfaces. We aim to create new Audio User Interfaces (AUIs) for the automatic separation and annotation of audio from complex sound scenes using acoustic vector sensor beamforming technology. Specifically, we will develop: speech AUIs for noisy, multi-talker, reverberant environments; and sound transcription AUIs for the deaf. Ultimately, users will be able to walk into a room, hold conversations and leave with a searchable, automatically ....Beamforming with acoustic vector sensors for audio user interfaces. Specifically, we will develop: speech AUIs for noisy, multi-talker, reverberant environments; and sound transcription AUIs for the deaf. Ultimately, users will be able to walk into a room, hold conversations and leave with a searchable, automatically-generated transcript of the audio events, tagged with metadata. The application of these technologies will create new possibilities for recording audio in the music, radio, TV industries, and future home based audio communication systems.Read moreRead less

Developing novel concepts for improved safety in aircraft emergency situations. The outcomes of this project will enable the creation of an emergency system that can improve visual situation awareness in emergency landing scenarios by investigating novel detection, control and planning algorithms. The project will contribute significantly to Australia's share in technologies for aircraft automation.
Semantic Vectorisation: From Bitmaps to Intelligent Representations. The objective of this innovative project is to provide a solution to the open question of representing natural images by semantically rich vector graphics. The challenges are to identify key visual and temporal elements for images and videos, and efficiently decompose the visual data into semantic vector representations that are faithful to original data, compact and editable. The project aims to investigate new bitmap-to-vector conversion methods. It is expected to develop a framework where semantic labels and hyperlinks can be embedded in visual data automatically. It hopes to pioneer the creation of a web of images where the links are on image/video regions. New image simplification, stylisation, and non-photorealistic rendering methods are expected to be provided.Read moreRead less
Development of a three dimensional audio-visual next generation speech recognition system. To overcome the disadvantages of current Audio-Visual Speech Recognition Systems, we propose a set of robust algorithms in three dimensional computer vision and speech processing. The proposed system will have far-reaching implications in various areas, for example, human-machine interaction for speech recognition in automated dialog systems and voice-to-text conversions.
