Face recognition systems are heavily dependent on the nature of the input to the system. Variability in appearance due to changes in illumination, expression, pose, etc. can reduce the recognition results of the existing systems. The aim of this project is to develop new techniques to improve the recognition accuracy in natural environment where unwanted image variations exist. The development of such techniques will be of great importance to Australia's security and safety. The outcome of this research will provide the first steps towards formulating the next generation recognition systems that will improve the suitability of the face recognition for use in security, surveillance, intelligent robotics, banking, and smart environments.Read moreRead less

Highly scalable video compression is critical to the emergence of new applications in video distribution and management. Examples include interactive remote browsing of video and robust video surveillance over shared networks. Previous ARC funding produced fundamental breakthroughs in scalable video compression, resulting in a new paradigm which has been adopted by leading researchers in the field. The present project addresses the two most important problems which currently limit the potential of this paradigm. Inspired by the applicant's recent discoveries, the outcomes of this project are likely to represent significant scientific breakthroughs and contribute to a new international video coding standard.Read moreRead less
Compression and communication of single and multi-view video based on overlapping motion hint fields. This project explores a new way of communicating motion for video and multi-view (3D) applications, facilitating efficient interactive access to content. Outcomes will include new compression methods that avoid redundant transmission of motion side information, plus client/server technology that leverages metadata from smart surveillance cameras.

This project will investigate the utility of grid computing in the detection of breast cancer from magnetic resonance (MR) images. The large quantity of data acquired using MR imaging is difficult for clinicians to review and the cost of missed or incorrect detection is high. To provide rapid visualisation and assessment of the acquired data, grid computing will be used in conjunction with interactive visualisation with haptic feedback. Grid computing experience and haptic device expertise will be achieved via Swedish collaborators. The successful outcome of this project will be software for the production of 3D colour-coded breast images in which suspicious regions are highlighted and can be physically interrogated using the haptic device.Read moreRead less

A theoretical framework for practical partial fingerprint identification. Fingerprints captured from a crime scene are often partial and poor quality which makes it difficult to identify the criminal suspects from large databases. This project will find mathematical models which can estimate the missing information located in the blank areas of a partial fingerprint and effectively identify it.

This project aims to compare leading methods for technology-assisted dietary assessment. Excessive cost and questionable accuracy limit the routine use of dietary assessment and undermine decision making in Australia. This project intends to compare three technology methods of assessing diet with the current standard recall method used in population surveys in order to confirm if the use of food images and automated methods provide new approaches to improve accuracy and consumer acceptability. Expected outcomes of this project include more accurate and acceptable methods of assessing dietary intake. These findings will inform decision making for researchers, policy makers and practitioners in Australia, and potentially lead to more regular population surveillance.Read moreRead less
