ARC Training Centre for Transforming Australia's Naval Manufacturing Industry. The aim of the Training Centre is to transform the Australian naval manufacturing industry by creating a new cohort of industry-focused, high-level and broadly skilled engineers and researchers. The resulting network of engineering researchers will enable the industry to more rapidly innovate and solve key problems concerning the efficient design, construction and sustainment of naval platforms. This industrial transformation will bring significant benefits to Australia as it commences a very ambitious shipbuilding program comprising the design and manufacture of new fleets of submarines, future frigates and patrol boats. The success of these major projects is reliant on developing this cohort of researchers to solve the key research questions.Read moreRead less

This Network brings together key researchers and practitioners interested in the nature and evolution of Australian identity, memory and heritage, including heritage and museum professionals, and scholars in environmental studies, history, geography, cultural studies, Aboriginal studies, architecture, urban policy, archaeology and materials conservation. It comes under two Commonwealth Research Priority Areas: Environmentally Sustainable Australia, and Safeguarding Australia. The Network enables broader understanding of these Priority Areas by examining cultural and historical factors, providing the basis of more far-reaching and effective solutions to current problems. The Network facilitates sharing of information and research including specific collaborative projects in these research areas.Read moreRead less

Development of a digital transmission electron microscope facility: Transmission electron microscopy is a fundamental tool for the study of biological systems at the ultrastructural level. This project will establish a facility that will be accessible to a range of biological researchers, replacing aged and non-sustainable electron microscopy facilities. The instrument will revitalise cellular research and provide additional insights and outcomes related to the study of intracellular features in a diverse range of systems and models. This will add substantially to the knowledge base across a wide range of fields of research, increasing national contributions in the areas of neuroscience, separation science and marine science.Read moreRead less

Collaborative remote access will be developed for sophisticated instrumentation, including instruments planned for the Replacement Research Reactor and Australian Synchrotron. A structure database service with cross disciplinary content and versatile visualisation and analysis capabilities will further exemplify smart information use. The internet services will ultimately harness the Grid, enabling linkage into other national and international Grid systems. Encompassing physics, computer science, applied mathematics, chemistry and biochemistry, and catalysing interaction across these disciplines, the MMSN will impact all five National Research Priority 3 goals.Read moreRead less

Contemporary speech science and technology are driven by the availability of large speech corpora. While audio databases exist for languages spoken in America, Europe and Japan, there is currently no large auditory-visual database of spoken language, and certainly not one for Australian English. Here we will establish the Big Australian Speech Corpus, which will support a speech science research and development using Australian English and facilitate the development of Australian speech technology applications from automatic speech recognition and text-to-speech synthesis used in taxi and other ordering services, to hearing prostheses and talking head aids for learning-impaired children, and a range of security and forensic applications.Read moreRead less
