Next-generation spatial keyword search. Spatial keyword search is like a normal web search plus additional location information, which helps users to obtain a better ranking of results by considering the spatial proximity. The success of this project will deliver a next-generation spatial keyword search system that overcomes the severe usability limitations experienced by users today.
Sociophysical Interactions: understanding the role of social and tangible technologies in maintaining good habits into old age. How can technology help us 'age well'? The project will study, design and evaluate novel information systems that integrate and support social engagement and physical activity in order to build foundational knowledge about these technologies and maintain the opportunities for social engagement and physical activity in our ageing population.
CyberMate: using digital social media and Internet data to support mental health interventions in young Australians. This project will develop CyberMate, which is a novel automated psychological intervention based on data collected from social networks, personal diaries, natural language processing and machine learning techniques. The Internet-based intervention will be the first of its kind, helping young people affected by depression and other mental health issues.
Formalising and automating the elicitation and reconciliation of requirements from multiple stakeholders. It is well recognised that requirements specifications are often error-prone and that it is much cheaper to detect and fix these errors early in the software development life cycle than later. A major problem with requirements determination is that each and every stakeholder has his/her own representation of the enterprise reality. It is well recognised that requirements specifications are often error-prone and that it is much cheaper to detect and fix these errors early in the software development life cycle than later. A major problem with requirements determination is that each and every stakeholder has his/her own representation of the enterprise reality. This project seeks to take these views and use set-theoretical techniques from Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) to automatically generate and compare the underlying conceptual models. A process model based on FCA has been proposed which we will extend and empirically evaluate in this project. The result will be a more rigorous and yet pragmatic approach to requirements engineering which offers the greatest economic leverage.Read moreRead less
Novel audio watermarking techniques for tracing multimedia piracy. This project aims to develop inaudible, high-capacity audio watermarking techniques to trace the illegal copying and distribution of multimedia data containing a sound component, such as audios and sound videos. With the rapid growth of communication networks and the use of advanced multimedia technology, digital multimedia data can be easily copied, manipulated and distributed. This has led to strong demand for new techniques to ....Novel audio watermarking techniques for tracing multimedia piracy. This has led to strong demand for new techniques to prevent illegal use of copyrighted data. The project is expected to advance the theory of audio watermarking and enhance Australia's international competitiveness in this field.

A provable privacy-preserving data sharing system for the cloud environment. This project aims to develop an innovative data sharing system, with a mathematically provable privacy guarantee, in a cloud environment. This will be adopted by Australian Education Management Group’s (AEMG) cloud campus to exchange data in a restricted privacy manner between partner institutions. It will be commercialised as a middleware that can be plugged into existing cloud environments to maintain required privacy ....A provable privacy-preserving data sharing system for the cloud environment. This project aims to develop an innovative data sharing system, with a mathematically provable privacy guarantee, in a cloud environment. This will be adopted by Australian Education Management Group’s (AEMG) cloud campus to exchange data in a restricted privacy manner between partner institutions. It will be commercialised as a middleware that can be plugged into existing cloud environments to maintain required privacy even when the cloud crosses various jurisdictions with different privacy policies. The outcomes will benefit educational organisations, and lay the foundations for data sharing in other communities such as the government, banks, and other industries in Australia.Read moreRead less

Due to Australia’s unique geographical distribution and population density, many regional or remote areas lack infrastructural support and development, including telecommunications and electricity supply. It is important to provide information and communication services in such infrastructure-deficient environments. In this project, we will develop a first-ever commercially ready Fog information system, or FogIS in short, to enable localised information and communication services, while preserving users' privacy, in infrastructure-deficient environments. The deployment of this system will bring great benefits to Australia’s economic growth, the quality of life, cybersecurity, and environment control in rural and regional Australia. Read moreRead less

Thanks to the proliferation of the Internet and web technologies, it is now possible to exploit the power of these technologies to facilitate the cooperation of teams of workers across distances. Such virtual teams and virtual enterprises are expected to overcome many problems associated in the modern service industry spanning continents. Countries (such as Australia) that are located far from the main markets (e,g, Europe and North America) stand to gain substantially from successful deployment of such virtual organisations. Researchers from UNSW and LORIA France have been working together on the development of cooperative management models for virtual enterprises. This application seeks funding for the travel of researchers across these countries to facilitate this research.Read moreRead less

Many design professions including architecture, fashion, and engineering can benefit from the outcomes of this project and may return financial benefits to Australia, since they heavily rely on sketching in the conceptual design process. Other areas, such as films, computer games, user interface design that involves storyboarding and visualization may also benefit from sketching in virtual reality. Further research may be carried out using a variety of VR facilities and a responsive workbench (3D interactive table-top display) to allow distributed Virtual Prototyping between geographically separated design teams, to assemble the product drawn using a force feedback device to place Australia in a leading position.Read moreRead less

Improving provision of a document store as a service in a public cloud. This project aims to develop a model of document-oriented database correctness and performance that can be applied to cloud-hosted clusters. Many modern web applications rely on document-oriented databases hosted on clusters of virtualised servers from commercial cloud providers. Developers make difficult deployment decisions, such as how to combine data sharding and replication to meet service requirements without any guidance on the degree of precision. This research will allow developers and database administrators to predict how systems will behave in conditions difficult to simulate directly. Ultimately, this is expected to improve the quality and efficiency of services built using document databases.Read moreRead less
