A fundamental limitation of current algorithms is that they require labelled training data for every object class and therefore cannot be trusted to operate in unconstrained environments. This project aims to address this limitation using novel techniques that incorporate hierarchical relationships between object classes. Expected outcomes include new paradigms for algorithm design and evaluation, and establishing the problem as a focus of international research. The key practical benefit would be to accelerate the wider deployment of visual perception in applications such as autonomous vehicles, interactive robotics, and video analysis.Read moreRead less
Intelligent Technologies for Smart Cryptography. This project aims to improve cybersecurity by automating the process of generating cryptographic software for smart devices. The expected outcomes are tools that automatically produce efficient cryptographic software that resists attacks. The main benefit of this project is to reduce the amount of expert labour required when developing secure software.

Digitisation is the future of the preservation of and access to Australia's literary and cultural record and yet its implementation is not well understood. This project will investigate what determines forms of digitisation, which books are digitised, who can access them and how these changes influence our reading experiences. The project will use digitisation cases studies to generate a history of digitisation and the policies that govern it. The project will develop recommendations for cultural infrastructure projects, nationally and internationally. This project will provide significant benefits including improved knowledge and policy for the future protection and development of digital text technologies.Read moreRead less

This project aims to explore cultural, linguistic and geographic aspects of Aboriginal Western Desert art. The rise of Aboriginal desert art is an important cultural development in Australia’s cross-cultural history. Yet little research has been conducted directly with Western Desert artists. Consequently, our understanding of these artists and the historical, cultural and kin-based relationships that underscore their art practice remains undeveloped. The project intends to address these limitations to produce an anthropologically-informed art history. It is anticipated that this history will increase public appreciation of Aboriginal art, promote Aboriginal art and artists globally, and improve Aboriginal peoples’ capacity to access mainstream markets.Read moreRead less

This project aims to design and develop a data driven paradigm for service-oriented system engineering that allows system engineers and domain experts in different domains to build software systems easily in order to enable fast technology transfer within and across domain boundaries. This model integrates and automates a suite of efficient approaches for system structure determination, validation and recommendation based on keyword search, subgraph isomorphism and substructure query techniques. This project is expected to significantly accelerate the application of new technologies, for example, big data analytics and Internet of Things, in many of Australia's critical domains such as e-Health, smart cities, and cybersecurity.Read moreRead less

Deep Reinforcement Learning (RL) uses deep neural networks to represent and learn optimal decision-making policies for intelligent agents in complex environments. However, most RL approaches require millions of episodes to converge to good policies, making it difficult for RL to be applied in real-world scenarios taking significant resources. This project aims to equip RL with capabilities such as counterfactual reasoning and outcome anticipation to significantly reduce the number of interactions required, improve generalisation, and provide the agent with the capability to consider the cause-effects. These improvements would narrow the gap between AI and human capabilities and broaden the adoption of RL in real-world applications.Read moreRead less

This project aims to investigate how the value of cultural organisations and activities can be effectively communicated in official reporting processes. It aims to change the ways culture’s value is publicly determined by researching two innovative, socially responsible reporting frameworks, thus creating a dedicated framework for culture. Expected outcomes include new on-line reporting processes, principles and forms for cultural practitioners and funding agencies, and enhanced understanding in both policy and cultural domains of meaningful reporting practices. The project will transform the way artists and cultural organisations communicate the value of what they do to governments.Read moreRead less

This project investigates the provision of a blockchain-based solution for protecting the intellectual property and provenance of visual art, and ways to empower its economic, cultural, and social value and benefits. By exploring innovative non-fungible token (NFT) opportunities in a global cyber security context, we will co-design a user-friendly and compliant tool for expanding the creation and movement of art on existing virtual galleries and smart contract-enabled platforms. Building on interdisciplinary synergies between creative and IT practices, we will interrogate the efficacy, risks and governance surrounding this global technology, and produce vital new knowledge for engaging with risks and opportunities in the digital economy.Read moreRead less
