The Nanostructural Analysis Network Organization (NANO) is an Australian Major National Research Facility that provides access to a grid of advanced microscopic instruments for the nanostructural analysis of both physical materials and biological systems. The aim of this initiative is to provide the NANO community with a set of common, interoperable tools and services to enable more efficient, cost-effective storage, management, analysis and sharing of generated microscopic images, video and analytical data. The significance of the proposed middleware is that it will improve collaboration and reduce duplication across many disciplines, through a shareable, distributed national scientific image/video database.Read moreRead less

This project will focus on developing and understanding further the recent invention of the Fresnel fibre, which is designed to overcome diffraction from the end of an optical fibre. More sophisticated designs and combinations will allow arbitrary shaping of the optical field exiting an optical fibre for numerous applications. The physical basis for such phenomena to be realised is the efficient degree of coherent scattering possible in air-material fibre such as air-silica photonic crystal fibres. In conjunction advanced characterisation techniques will be developed.Read moreRead less
Hypersensitisation and Patterned Photosensitivity in Glass. Recent developments involving holographically patterned photosensitivity in glass-based optical waveguides developed by our group can be extended to fabricate complex two-dimensional structures including planar waveguide photonic bandgap devices for applications in telecommunications, sensing and signal processing. These will include novel grating-array based 2-D DFB lasers and filters in rare-earth doped planar waveguides. Novel etchin ....Hypersensitisation and Patterned Photosensitivity in Glass. Novel etching techniques to be used to enhance index contrast, as well as to characterise such devices, will be developed based on our recent observation of hydrogen-enhanced etching of glass. Such methods could potentially be applicable to not only photonic technologies but also semiconductor lithography of oxides.Read moreRead less

IOS are becoming increasingly important for organisations to remain competitive in a global marketplace. By using organisational motivations to better understand how to design and structure the processes for IOS implementation and set more realistic expectation, Australian organisations will be able to develop more effective, evidence-based methods for IOS implementation. The theory being tested is an original contribution in a growing area of information technology research. The data and rigorously tested research protocols developed will enhance Australia'a research standing, contribute to university teaching and researcher training, and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the Australian information technology industry. Developments in the area of business process management are currently hindered by the plethora of diverse business process execution languages. This project will develop techniques for dealing with interoperability issues induced by this language heterogeneity. The project combines theoretical research, grounded in concurrency theory and workflow patterns, with pragmatic research focusing on languages supported by commercial tools. The outcome will be a framework for comparing the expressiveness of process execution languages and defining mappings between them. This will place Australia at the forefront of developments in business process management systems: a crucial technology in today's global, dynamic, and heterogeneous environments.

Legal resources and documents are increasingly available in electronic form allowing previously impossible collaborative and searching techniques for legal practitioners. By adding extra semantic markup to legal resources and documents increased processing capabilities are enabled. These include the ability to search for resources based on there existing a conceptual link and the ability to integrate resources that use different terminology. This project will enable these capabilities via the development of a novel ontology driven framework for collaborative legal software. This will allow significant efficiency gains and cost savings in the $9.5 billion Australian legal services sector.Read moreRead less

Web services are the pillar of the new generation of Internet technologies. They provide standardized access to functionality that would otherwise be hidden inside enterprise information systems. As the existing base of web services expands, there is a need for techniques to select, configure, assemble, and coordinate web services to perform complex user tasks. This project will advance the fundamental understanding and know-how in this area by addressing three complementary research challenges: how to, organize and search semantically rich service descriptions; select services with respect to flexible and personalized criteria; and coordinate services in an adaptive and context-aware manner.Read moreRead less
