With an unprecedented 11-fold growth in mobile data services expected over the next five years, wireless networks are facing a fundamental challenge in supporting this enormous traffic. In meeting this challenge, next generation wireless networks need to offer services over smaller cells with a significantly larger number of base-stations, thus allowing high capacity connection to the global internet (backhaul). The aim of this project is to formulate optimisation methodologies for a sustainable energy-efficient small cell backhaul infrastructure. Through integration with the optical fibre infrastructure, the research will address network planning, design, and optimisation in terms of performance, cost-effectiveness, and energy efficiency.Read moreRead less

Using radio frequency identity (RFID) tags to revolutionise sensor network technologies has the potential to have wide ranging impacts on many of Australia's key industries, including precision agriculture, health care and habitat monitoring (e.g., bush fires).
This fundamental research will create a new type of communication network that will have tremendous impact by allowing monitoring and tracking technologies to be deployed over large, infrastructure-free areas at nominal cost. By contributing to the solution of the cost and complexity problems that limit practical deployment of sensor networks, we hope help Australia become a global leader in realizing real-world benefits from information communication technologies.Read moreRead less

Photonic packaging plays key roles in development of new optical technology. The project aims to establish the theories and techniques for characterising the integrity of soldered and adhesively bonded assemblies for photonic packaging. The critical failure mechanisms will be investigated, and sophisticated life prediction models will be established using artificial neural network (ANN) approaches for reliability assessment. The outcomes of the project will fill the gap in the knowledge for characterising failure processes of these assemblies and provide effective methods and easy-to-use guidelines
for reliability evaluation and life prediction of photonic packages, expanding and enhancing Australia's capacity in the areas.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a revolution in sensing and automation that is becoming vital for industries including farming and mining. However, in remote areas, it is especially challenging to connect the large numbers of devices needed. This project will develop novel signal processing and communications approaches to deliver high quality data services to vast numbers of remote IoT devices, distributed over continental scales connected via low earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations. It will provide the tools for LEO satellite service providers to dimension their networks and assist IoT providers to scale their remote sensor networks and IoT deployments, with ever increasing demand on the limited satellite bandwidth.Read moreRead less
