Advancing Obesity Prevention And Control In Australia

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $461,678.00
    Summary
This Fellow will make a significant contribution to the science of childhood obesity prevention. By interrogating high quality data from successful community based interventions the Fellow will identify key systemic components for effective chronic disease prevention. This information will then inform the evaluation of the $80m multiple community Victorian Prevention Community Model involving >25% of the State’s population.

    Career Development Fellowship

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $451,716.00
    Summary
The aim is to make life safer for at-risk older people and to give them the capacity to participate in daily life activity. Transition from hospital to home and accidental falls are two events in which a lack of capacity to make adaptive changes or resume previous life activities can alter life course outcomes. I will engage in effectiveness trials of interventions and research to ensure the implementation of new knowledge into clinical and public health practice.

Associations Between Periodontal Disease And Cardiovascular Surrogate Endpoints In An Adult Indigenous Population

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $413,242.00
    Summary
The relationship between periodontal disease and cardiovascular risk markers, both of which are high among the Indigenous Australian population, is established. This study seeks to explore the prevalence of periodontal disease and cardiovascular risk markers among this population, and to determine if implementation of a periodontal intervention leads to improved cardiovascular risk outcomes. There may be benefit in applying this model to other areas of Indigenous health promotion and research.

Improving Community Approaches For Common Childhood Conditions.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $478,602.00
    Summary
Melissa’s end goal is community-based strategies that effectively prevent or manage common childhood conditions, which she addresses via four distinct yet unified programs of research (language-literacy, hearing loss, obesity, and early mental health-behaviour). All four programs are guided by long-term strategic plans that include advocacy and translation as central tenets. A further focus is research capacity-building in these areas via her substantial doctoral-postdoctoral programs.

Classifying Local Environmental Attributes For Healthier, More Equitable Child Development

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $437,034.00
    Summary
Theory and evidence suggests rapid physical and social development makes children more sensitive to the impacts of environmental exposures than adults. Paradoxically, children’s environmental health is under-researched. My four-year vision is to support efforts to improve the health of children and to narrow child health inequities by co-producing new evidence that will help advocate for spatially targeted prevention initiatives and public policies in Australia.

REDUCING HARMS FROM SUBSTANCE MISUSE IN REMOTE INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES REQUIRES INTERVENTIONS DELIVERED AS PROMISED WITH MEASURABLE IMPACTS?

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $439,920.00
    Summary
We cannot accurately estimate the occurrence of many diseases and risk factors for remote Indigenous communities where more of the ‘health gap’ is suffered. Interventions targeting substance misuse risk factors have not yet produced the community- and individual-level impacts they were designed to bring about. In this Fellowship, I will improve evaluation methods and measures to produce credible evidence for assessing program implementation and effectiveness in remote communities.
